Then siphon it into a 5 gallon bucket or whatever you use when you do a water change. Trust me man, having done this on enough square footage to cover a football field it's the easiest way.

Haven't done a water change for at least 8 months...

Good lord man. It might just be easier to pay someone to maintain your tank for you.

Siphon it into a 5 gallon bucket, and then pour the bucket back into the tank.

Bend the handle on a regular square aquarium net back 15-45 degrees, affix a blunted razor blade on the inside of the net flush with the net's wire frame. I'd try epoxy first. Blue is tank, black is net, red is razor. Depending on the size of your net you'll be able to get all but the lower perimeter scraped and netted. To minimize this area you could make your own net, only an inch or so tall.

And there is the tough part. Short of injection molding your own plastic frame, I doubt there is any epoxy/glue that will be able to give a really good bond between the scraper and the net. Keep in mind there will be a lot of stress placed on that joint.

Take piece of 1/2" pvc long enough to reach the back corner of your tank and not get your hands wet. Cut a slot on one end at an angle to hold your razon blade. On the other end put a slip x threaded coupling, then a hose barb, the a piece of hose enough to put a few colis in the bottom of a bucket. Then you can scrape and syphon at the same time when you do a water change.

The only thing I would add to that Wazz is a valve at the bucket end so ya wouldn't have to restart the suction every time you emptied the bucket.

Just saw this thread, but this is exactly how I used to do it.
