Today while working on my tank I noticed a dead Turbo Snail behind a rock. Without thinking about it, I reached in there and pulled it out. The second that thing came out of the water, it emitted a smell worse than death.

Battling the flu already, my stomach has been weak the last week or so. That smell about sent me running for the bathroom!

I'd like to hear your stories. Can there be anything else (dead or alive) that smells that bad that you've experienced in this hobby?

Dead starfish are about the worst thing I've ever smelled.

Not in the hobby, working the trade. Dead run has its own special odor, I once had a customer whose breath was an exact match.

Honestly, I can't remember which was the worst as far as just smell, curing live rock can be pretty stench-ee. But what left the biggest impact on me, personally, was finding a tank of dead turtles. The way the skeletons slopped out of the shells gives me the willies STILL to this day. choke! :x ugh! :x cough!

Dead snails and urchins are really bad, but my worst experience has to be the time i spilled a full cup of skimmate on to the carpet. The smell was pretty bad, but the painful part was that no matter what I did, I couldn't get the smell out. We ended up changing the carpet.

If you have ever used a yeast culture to produce CO2 (usually for a planted tank) then you know that after all the yeast dies that smell is the worst smell ever. Makes skimmate and rotting animals smell sweet.

hmmm....and i think the worst smell i have ever experienced, is a dead human, that's been locked in a house for a couple weeks in mid 90 degree weather.
you could smell it all the way down the block. it went through you...not only was it repulsive, but subconciously, you knew it was dead human. the worst- believe me. :(

 Didja feel like when you dumped the bong over way back when? D'oh!

I have a tip for you guys, this stuff REALLY works, it's amazing, as long as its smell doesn't bother you too much. It's used by those folks who clean up brutal crime scenes and homes/apartments where someone has expired and gone to mush (much like what Mr. X just described, sorry! :( ) for a while. It's got a funky smell, but for me it's better than that dog pee smell.

Odorcide. Is the SHIZNIT! (I thought about washing the stinky dog with this stuff, but it doesn't say it's safe for that, and since she pees almost every time she's in the house it's just as well to keep her OUTside.) My tip -- DILUTE it. You really and truly don't usually need to use it full strength, plus, if you do, you'll piss right through it and at (best price) $20 a pop it's a bit spendy to just be pissing through it.

Worst smell ever associated with this hobby is either rotting frilly mushrooms or rotting anemones. That smell doesn't just wash off either.

I left some grass shrimp in an ice chest for a couple months. It was really bad. there was the dead cow that was bloated floating in a pond. The bb guns weren't a good idea. but Mr x's experience is the kind that just stays with you forever.

I posted a thread about my dead snail smell a couple weeks ago too!

My bottle of phytoplankton is some rancid stuff too. There are no less than three separate sentences on the one label stating how bad it can smell!
