i have the need for a lubricant, not unlike vaseline, that i can put on a submerged moving part under water. can i safely use vaseline? i am thinking that it will break down if there is some heat coming from this motor.
is there a silicone based lubricant that i can use?

Silicone lubricant does work the best, IMO. It is often sold as o-ring lube. I know Fosters and Smith carries it because I have ordered some before.

+1.

It's good stuff to have for O-rings for regular maintenance anyhow.

I can understand how this hobby can make you feel like you need a safe and effective lubricant sometimes. 8O

It is good stuff to have for your o-ring!

I got some "marine safe lubricante" from Fosters as well. Silicone based and comes in a little bottle. Spilled the bottle on my hardwood floor and thought I had wiped up the mess until I walked by the aquarium and took a little ride. I haven't had any trouble with the stuff. I have used it on my "O" rings and flex tubing fittings without any problems.

+1, but you can also get it at a dive shop locally pretty easily.

the lubricant that came with this oceans motions wavemaker was very thick. it's not something that could be spilled. unfortunately, they only send a little thumbnail sized glob in a piece of cellophane, and if you have to open up the wavemaker, like i did, you'll need to use it all to re-lube it.
my OM got clogged twice, by a couple grains of sand :? . so now i just have it hooked into my system, but not running. i am done moving things around and stirring up sand, so i need something to lubricate it before i fire it back up.
you say a dive shop will have it?
