Well after using the LED setup for 4 months I have some thoughts I want to share.

1. Power consumption is less. Not true. I had a 3x250w Hqi. it drew 6.3a the solaris draws almost the same.

2. Reliability. Well I have had to replace 2 LED light strips due to solder issues. Yes i did get replacments but one strip was used!!!! How am I going to judge when to replace my LED when they get old??? So at this rate, one strip going bad every two months, 12 of them will have been replaced by the time my 2 year warranty is up.......and then I have to pay the 75.00 to 80.00 per strip cost so........IS IT CHEAPER????? Spending 4000.00 on a system like this makes me think this wouldnt happen. Being made in china, I can see why. Why sacrifice quality for the all mighty buck?
Also had a screw fall out of one of my power supplies. Which are simply computer power supplies, not anything special, note the amount of failures on these forums.

3. Engineering. Yes this light was a big step but as a fellow engineer some things could have been done allot better. Examples: One power supply, Fan filters to keep the inside from getting dusty. Led loosing the color and failing by being driven incorrectly. Features on the controller not working! This is a big one. Controller issues and bugs, and no urge from PFO to allow us to upgrade to non bug firmware.

I have lost some very expensive corals due to this light. While it is my fault on buying this...... I also want to inform you the buyer that you will not get any better growth. In fact with all of the color shift from the LED's and the power supplies overheating its a wonder any of my corals survived.

And it dosent look good.....looks worse than HO bulbs!!

Im sorry to be ranting but for the kind of money we have all spent or will spend, I expect to have allot more quality and not feeling everytime I look at my tank that I made a mistake..... a very costly mistake

Over all Im not satisfied in the craftsmanship.....if you can call it that! The customer service is OK, the only thing that keeps me from going nuts about this.

I have alot of people who ask me about my PFO Solaris, I have always been truthfull with them. I tell them to wait..... No one out there has done enough research, I dont know what the missing part of data is but there is .....

Save your money!

It seems to me that alot of stuff we pay good money for anymore is made very poorly and cheaply, but still costs us more. The cheap labor in china is driving this! Why do we do business with a Communist government? We dont do trade with cuba!!!!

PS If anyone is selling a 72" fixture with 3 250W MH Atinics good quality let me know I would be willing to sell my Solaris lights for $2000.00 half off for the 72" fixture and shipping costs.

A LFS around my way has the same solaris unit. Unfortunately they decided to try it on one of their SALES tanks with some of the rarest and most expensive corals in it. MAN was that a mistake. After about 3 weeks I visited again and saw their corals were not doing so well.... some were "REACHING" other seemed dead and discolored. Mind you this was one of their prized tanks. I was sorry that My new tank was not up and running yet because I would have offered to take some of their stock off hand and try to revive them. I did however reccomend to the owner (who is a real jerk btw.. and the entire store is over priced but they have some of the best coral selection ever) (150.00 for a Mag 7... !). I reccomended he change the light cycle and bring the tank back over to metal halides/VHO's asap to save them. I heard similiar issues with those lights from other forums.

Thanks buddy.

I put my Halide fixture on my 220 FOWLR and my Solaris is on my 125 SPS reef. I really need another Halide fixture. I hate the Solaris. That little voice said not to do it......I really got to start listening to that voice.

Do they offer any kind of money back guarantee? I mean, $4k pretty much = a car (or, see sig pic).

If nothing else, this helps establish reputation.

Are you going to kick yourself if they have a 90 days money back guarantee? Don't worry, I have a feeling that they probably don't.

a LFS has 2- 4 foot and 2- 2 foot on a 375 oval tank and I don't like the way the tank looks.. they have the same problem with the strips going out too. Over 7 of the strips have went out. You would think 7,000 worth of lights they would work great. I'll stick with HQI's!!!

wow that sucks...sorry to hear that man..a buddy of mine owns a company that makes led light fixtures for growin plants and other things and i had mentioned the solaris unit to him...after reviewing the features he told me he could make the same exact thing with more features and have it RETAIL at $800...i thought it might be worthwhile looking into but if solaris is getting reviews like this i might reconsider...

The USED LED module you just sent me worked for about an hour then died. Maybe the amount of heatsink compound had something to do with it? The module came dirty and with barely any compound on it. I paid way too much to be getting USED parts!!! I dont deserve it or does anyone else.

My white LED are shifting yellow. If you drove the LED's with the LED controllers that are made for the Luxeon maybe this might work, but no your using computer power supplies.

Oh yea I can see the overspray on the splashguard.

Ive been nothing but kind to your staff, but now Ive had it! I just waisted 4000.00

I want a refund or a 72" MH fixture and the remaining $$ refunded.

This is a lemon and I dont have to take it anymore!!!

I wrote this to PFO, but the posting ability is not working for some reason...... Ummmmmm

Anyone else have issues with PFO?

hmm. sorry to hear that. i saw a tank at a local store that looked very good with the solaris fixture on it, but it was the only one. all the others i see have drastic shadowing and poor color.
it's not cheap labor that's the issue here- it's solaris' decision to accept a mediocre product.
i used to deliver to General Motors..to all of their plants throughout the U.S.
those guys are protected by unions and get paid very well, but i could tell you stories for hours about all the screwups and poor craftsmanship going on in those plants. just look inside your american car and pay atention to the detail, or lack there-of. now, look inside a toyota...you don't see glue coming out of the seams, and hear things rattling, atleast not in the ones built in the japanese plants.
the best part is General Motors buys parts from the lowest bidders for their transmissions, which up till a few years ago, was belgium. :?

it's all about what Solaris, or GM is willing to accept as the decent product they are putting their names on. it's a real shame

Ya know I have a odysea light on my 210 FOWLR. The bulbs and ballasts are crap but after you replace them your still cheaper than a Coralife. I swear the fixture is the same. Same quality. Not UL approved.....

Maybe I've just gotten lucky in the past, but I've always had good customer service from PFO. I've always been able to talk to a real person, reasonably quick. The number I've always used is just their business number: 1800-577-960. The webpage, if you haven't found it is, www.pfolighting.com .

With this much money at stake I would never trust e-mail or snail mail. Talk to a real person, and do it fast. Have your receipt on hand, and any serial numbers and that sort of thing.

Good luck.

This post came just in the nic of time. I was VERY CLOSE to ordering one of these for my 150. The reviews I had read in the past sounded mostly good. This is making me think twice however. SnowMan.....am I understanding that you own one and are mostly satisfied? I really hate to pay so much money for what's sounds like now as a fragile poorly-made fixture.

Well PFO is making it right. Im getting the pro series Halide fixture with all the bells and the remaing money refunded.

I personally would not buy one, If you are just keeping softies....maybe. But for the savings in power....witch there really is none to make it worthwhile
Heat generation is still pretty high. They are quiet.

If you like to spend alot of money and see it burn out LED strips, power supply problems..... plus more...... then go ahead.

Check out the forum on the solaris at the PFO website.

Ok after going back to MH I have some updates.

My Ca when running the Solaris was 420ppm, now after my SPS are getting the correct lighting Ca went to 360ppm with no Ca reactor change, now after cranking up the reactor my Ca is at 420ppm again.

Growth is way up (Ca uptake)

The color of the corals are much better.

Now I havent changed anything and noticed these effects.

So take it for what its worth but the Solaris is best for softies, they are really expensive actinic's....

Man, glad I read this post. Been wanting a Solaris for some time to save electric. I will be happy with 2-250 watt halide and 4-39watt t-5.
