My lawnmower blenny died suddenly (he was swimming toward food, and then just stopped and dropped at the bottom of the tank - heart attack?) after one year in my tank, so one question: What is the typical lifespn of captive fgish - per type?

Depends upon the type, they potentially can live longer than in the wild simply due to lack of predation and abundance of food, but only if you don't have any "bad" things occur usually. I recall reading about one such clownfish that was over 20 years old in captivity, it looked old too.

I doubt your blenny died of old age though, unsure what could have happened.
