I have a 75g reef that has been running for 15 years. I had mostly softies, multiple mushroom species, and some LPS ("Trumpet" and Frogspawn) until recently.
Over the last year or so, one species of 'fuzzy' mushroom has started to take over the tank - there are probably 100+ in the tank now, even after I constantly remove them when I do my weekly water change. (Parameters have not been tested recently, but I do a weekly 10% water change. I use RO water and IO Salt.) The mushrooms have killed almost all of my other sofites except one last "tree" and one remaining zooanthid patch. This mushroom has also killed the frogspawn and they are starting to creep onto the main piece of Trumpet, which I have had in the tank for 13 years now, and fragged at least 20 pieces off of.
Whenever I can, I reach in and remove any that I can pull out without disturbing the rock.
My question is, is there a good method to removing mushrooms other than taking the rock out and letting it dry off? I have found that when I tear the mushroom, or even slice it with a scalpel, I can never get the entire thing and it just ends up growing back again, sometimes two or three from the original.
I know most people would like to have too many corals in their tank, but this is reaching a plague situation and I'd much rather have my Trumpet coral survive than the mushrooms.
Thanks for any tips 8)
