Powerhead impeller question

hi ya... it's been awhile... how have you all been? me and my little world have been chugging along unscathed for a short while now...

but alas i need some advice... the impellers on my powerhead 402s keep breaking. do i really need to buy new ones or can i use a kind of reef safe type crazy glue and just glue the plastic ring at the top back together?

I've superglued impellers back together before and they lasted a while. Usually they end up breaking again though.

Glueing the blabes back on would only be a temporary fix at best. Glueing also would put the impeller out of ballance so that could cause issues.

What Mark said about balance. It's odd that the shaft is breaking since it should bear little load unless there is some inherent problem with the powerhead. For peace of mind, I'd just buy some new Maxijets to replace the Hagens.

well... balance is certainly a problem. the impeller rotates, but it bounces around since it's unbalanced and barely pushes half the amount of water as the others.... and it vibrates terribly...

so much for a "quick fix"....

ahhhh... i love my piggy-bank.

if i break it open will i get my money back? :lol:

soooo... apparently i am in the market for some new powerheads... currently i am running three (two since one is broken) Powerhead 402 on a Wavemaker Pro.

suggestions? cost will have to be a factor as i just put a used triumph motorcycle on my fiance's finger.... :wink:

buy some maxijets. Or make her buy you a new tank as your 'ring'

which one? is it safe to assume the 400series is the same as what i currently have, and the 600 ect is just more water flow?

here is a quick shot of my tank, which is sadly almost a year old....
the kenya tree in the corner is a monstrosity now, and growing where ever it can get a hold on just about anything..... and the leather has grown. i'll try and get hold of another camera to take an update for y'all....

Ah - the wavemaker can be very hard on powerheads. Thats where the load is coming from.

IME MJ's hold up better and are quieter than the Hagens on wavemakers. Though I love my 801's still in use after 8 years or so.

i use an 801 as my return... i have an extra at my mom's in what used to be the fish room. i always forget to grab it. i was thinking possibly to use that one, but i always like the idea of it being only used as a backup. but the one in the sump, man it's been a serious trouper. i'd go as far to say as four years, one impeller.

I suggest one of the Tunze nano streams. More flow, small foot print, and great customer service (Can't use it on a timer though).

If you are going to use a timer, you cannot loose with any powerhead from the maxijet line. I currently have two 600's on a wavemaker timer in my smaller tank with no ill effect. Even if the impeller should break, there are relatively cheap replacements available at your LFS or online. I don't know what size tank you have, but if you can handle the flow, consider two modified maxijets as opposed to your current set up.
