...like putting a 2-3" regal angelfish in my 29-gallon nano.

Yes, it's my day off and I've already done all my cleaning & errands. So, the idle thoughts turn to my reef and what I can do that's 'different.'

Thoughts?

Peace,

Chip

Just as an FYI this would be the only fish in the tank until it needs a larger tank. I'm setting up a 125 gallon angel/butterfly tank around Christmastime.

If the tank is well established and it doesn't have any competition for grazing then maybe. I would not do it longer than a couple of months and hopefully you can find one thats eating frozen - I'd feed the hell out of it , maybe keep rotating in algae covered live rock from another tank for it to peck out as it cleans out the existing algae / microfauna.

When I had my Regal Angel, he was eating brine at the lfs but wouldn't eat in my tank. I threw in some caulerpa and he ate that like crazy. After 2 or 3 days, I managed to get him to eat formula one and spirulina. He would only eat them if they were big chunks though, not little pieces. He pretty much ignored brine and mysis shrimp when I threw them in.
29 gallons is definately small for a big angel. So long as you're planning an upgrade extremely soon and you're actually starting off with a little specimen, you should be fine.
This is something I always ask, especially when we're talking about upgrading from a small tank to a big tank. If you want a Regal Angel so bad Chip, why don't you just wait until you actually have the 125 setup and cycled? Why do you need to put it into the 29 gallon?

My thoughts? Don't.

1: Size considerations, do you care more about the eye candy than the harm you're causing to this creature? (this isn't a jab at you either, most of us are guilty of this in some way or another).

2: You threw down some serious scratch for some of those corals didn't you? Are you so rich that if they get picked at it won't be any big deal to you?

Again not a jab, with me, I wouldn't put one of those in my 100g tank for reason #2 if anything.

I wouldn't attempt it personally, but aside from that I'd be interested in your angel/butterfly set-up. My 120 FOWLR currently has a majestic angel, coral beauty, black back butterfly and a masked bannerfish (h.monoceros). Not sure what other angels or bf's I could add w/o upsetting the balance but definitely two of my favorite fish families.

Right now I'm planning on 3 semilarvatus butterflies, an Imperator angel, a regal angel, a goldflake angel , and a personifer angel.

The only one I'm hedging on is the goldflake...thinking of a black-banded angel instead. I've always liked that fish, but they are tough to keep.

Peace,

Chip
