Has anyone plumbed or thought about plumbing their reef aquarium with copper pipes? They have quick disconnects now for copper pipe and you could literally snap the system together. I was thinking about trying it out on my return lines. The value is the connections can still swivel without leaking... Just wondering if there is any problems over time with Salt and Copper... Thoughts?

I'd be very uneasy using copper pipe. No matter what you do you're still going to get some traces of copper in your system from these pipes, and most fish and especially inverts don't handle copper too well. I thought PVC piping was easy enough to deal with.

Copper (even in minute trace amounts) is toxic to most of the things you would keep in the tank so using copper pipe anywhere in a reef system is not a good idea.

Copper leaching would quickly kill all your invertebrates, and slowly kill your fish.

There's a reason people use PVC, it's pretty non-reactive with water, it's easy to assemble, it's cheap, and if you must have disconnect areas you can get unions to remove pieces as needed.

What about the copper pipes under the house? Are you suggesting that I remove all the copper plumbing - I would have to replace it from the street!

no...just, at the very end of those copper pipes, should be an R.O.D.I. unit to take out the harmful compounds.

Copper pipes under your house are fine, simply because the freshwater that runs through them isn't as reactive as saltwater. On top of that fact water runs through those pipes constantly so any copper that does get dislodged leaves that supply when you drink/cook/filter the water, where as for your tank it's the same water that's running through them constantly.

I've heard of massive kills just from using a single brass fitting.

Um, did anyone happen to mention no copper. Just wanted to make sure. Hey, look on the bright side. You won't have to worry about Ich
