i am going to set up another tank soon. i know some people seal their wood inside their cabinet and canopy to protect it, do you? what is a good sealant to use to protect against saltwater? my first tank furniture is not sealed because i did not know about it back then, it is still doing fine though after 5 years.

It really depends on how much salt spray and how much ventilation you have. I would seal mine but it is too late. There is slight mold growing on the stand due to the skimmer too tall for it.

YES!

Inside both my canopy and stand are three coats of flat white oil based enamel.

Using a flat white paint product called Killz on the inside will help lots to protect from water damage and prevent mold. It is made for use in wet areas. A solid coat of varnish over that will make it pretty much bullet-proof as far as water is concerned.

Its a good idea to seal top and underneith . Underneith for the accidents that might happen. (skimmer overflows, tip a bucket of saltwater etc.)
