I am told the starfish are bad and gobies starve to death. What other sand sifters can i get to keep my sand from compacting?

My pink spot watchman goby has done as good of a job as my two (RIP) sand sifter gobies. Along with the two posts above.

I haven't heard of sand sifting starfish as being bad. I have a couple in my tank for a couple of months now,and they do a great job of moving my thin sand layer around. Yellow-head Sleeper Gobies will also move a lot of sand. Just make sure your overflows are screened off well. :?

the problem with sand sifting stars is they get very large and do too good a job at cleaning the sand and eventually starve to death. they need very large tanks with lots of sand to live in.

I hadn't heard that camaroracer.....thanks for the info. I'm thinking maybe I should get rid of one of mine then. I have a 150g, but like you said, they do seem to be really going to town!

I really like my "Tiger Tail" cumber, it is always digging and moving sand around.

i love them too...how did i not think of that. mine is always cruising the tank eating sand and passing it through its body. turns over quite a bit of sand.

I feel (no hard facts) that anything in a well established tank is going to become very large; all animals over eat. My tiger tail already grew hudge and split. After taking one out, the other (origional) is growing hudge again. I only have a 46 bow and already he stretches 1/2 way across at night.
