I have a mag 9 for a return pump on my 75g. Its a year old now and doesnt seem to be putting out the water that it once was. I took it apart and checked the impeller, its still firmly attached to the magnet and not broken, also there was no buildup of any kind to cut flow. Do these pumps just wear out over time or do I just need to replace the impeller for some reason?

Thanks
Sam

Check the plumbing and make sure there is no snail shell, etc., that blocks the flow.

Are the fins on the impeller ground down? If there's less surface area pushing water there will be less flow.

Spin the impeller and make sure it turn freely.

Take the pump out and let it run by itself, and see if flow is normal.

Listen to any unusual noise, such as rattling, etc.

Make sure the magnet is not craciked.

Impellers need replacing from time to time. I change my Mag18's every two years or so. I have a Mag3 that has been in my pond for about 10 years and was a return for a saltwater sump back in the early 90's and is still running strong. The thing is a real work horse. That pump alone is why I use MagDrives for my return pumps.

I have had a Mag5 on my 29G saltwater tank for at least 4 years. I haven't cleaned it or done any of the other maintenance once. Water levels have gotten low enough on multiple occasions to circulate air thorough the pump and it still works like a charm. It seems indestructible.
