Just got a mag-drive 1800gph pump for my 75g. Do you think this is an ok size(too big or small??) I have a mag 700gph on my 36 gallon, and it has worked great over the years.

Unless you are having to pump the water from a sump in your basement, I think that should be more than enough. I am using a Mag 900 on my current 72 gallon bow and it does just fine.

IMO a mag 18 is too big for your tank. Thats what I have on my 120 and will use on my 210. The dual dursos on an AGA can barely handle the flow. I also have a mag 12 split, feeding a 40breeder and separate 65 fuge(with 7 feet of head pressure)both with one inch bulkheads. I have to choke back the mag 12 quite a bit on those tanks. IMO you should stick with a mag 7 or 9.

Thanks trido, I will probably take this one back an go for a smaller pump. I have a mag 700 on my 36, but it is choked back a bit. I may use a larger sump now, and maybe get the mag-9 or 12.

If you only have one drain on the 72G, I think the Mag 7 at full throttle is sufficient. I use a Quiet one 3000 which has a similar output on my 72G tank. IMO, the Mag 9 may be overkill and the 12 definately would be also if the flow returns directly to the display tank. Using too powerfull a pump will only increase the chance for microbubbles in the display.

Ok, so I took the giant mag18 back and got the 9.5 rated at 950gph(wallet is much happier). I plan on splitting it to run a 20g refugium, but I'm assuming the refugium will need much less flow??? My LFS thought the mag9 would still be plenty.
