One of my triggers have ich, so I'm treating my whole tank with coppersafe. Its a fish only with no live rock. I turned my skimmer off and also took out any carbon I had in my filters. Should I leave the skimmer off, or turn it back on?

Thanks

Hello

Triggers are pretty hearty, he can probably get rid of it on his own in time. I would feed the tank well, use Selcon. I just wouldnt use copper unless its a last resort. Its like chemotherapy for fish. And are you sure its ICH? What other fish do you have in this tank? Tangs are usually very good indicators that you have an ICH outbreak.

Oh yea, I would run the skimmer, but I never used copper.

Running the skimmer while medicating will pull the medication out typically...just something to keep in mind while you are treating your fish.

Depends on the type of medication. For organic medication with certain hydrophilic property, the skimmer can pull it out, but for inorganic medication, only the carbon can absorb it.

Skimmers will not reduce the level of copper sulfate to any significant degree. Not anywhere near what a little calcium carbonate will soak up anyway.

Having said that I feel that a hyposalinity treatment for the whole tank at a salinity of 12-13 ppt (a SG of 1.009) for 6 weeks is far more effective, less stressful to the fish, and simpler way to rid the tank of Cryptocaryon. You can drop the tank down to that salinity over 48 hours and make sure to maintain it there.
