I am building a tank where I work and need to figure out which filter I should get for a 75 gallon tank. The goal for the tank is to have it filled with live rock, easy corals, and some reef fish. Regardless of the filter type we are also going to hang a protein skimmer on the back.
I get confused when I look at the gph on the canister and power filters as the canisters don't pump as much water but are much more expensive. What is the best way I can play this thing? The budget is 1000$, and then a stipend every month after we set it up. suggestions?

What is your goal with the canister or power filter? You already have live rock and a skimmer. The live rock is your biological filter. If mechanical filtration is your goal, then either will serve the function just fine, and flow rate is of little consequence.

More than anything, you need flow. In this regard, a canister with good flow will serve you better, but cleaning them can be a PITA.

A power filter will keep good top water movement. This is what I use for mechanical filtration mostly. It also has the "bio-wheel" which I am sure helps. But just make sure to keep the pad clean.
