But any photos of my tank (or photos of anything for that matter) are not going to be posted, ever. I just killed the hard drive it was on. It's making all sorts of terrible mechanical sounds, and I'm a fool for not having backed up most of it :? Good thing is not much on the HD was "critical" ... just some stuff i can download again ... and 10 years of memories :(

Anyhow, you guys can blame Western Digital for my photo woes now ;)

Bet he could but man are those clean room operations very $$$. We had to have a drive done and at a "bro" deal we forked out $2,500!

This just proves what a mean-sprited bastard you really are. You have actually been taking pictures of your tank and not sharing them despite hundred of pleas from the masses. I just assumed that your camera was broke or you lost interest in photography.

Your evilness knows no bountries.

Sorry 'bout the HD. Google "hard drive recovery". I had one recovered once for about $500. Saved years of pictures that would have been otherwise lost. Prices for HD recovery vary from $500 to $2500. I can look up the company that I used if you decide to go this route.

Oh crap, that sux! :(

You may be able to save some of the data if the drive isn't too badly damaged. Knoppix (a linux distribution that can boot off of a CD), will read badly damaged hard drives and allow data recovery. A couple of articles to look at:

http://www.shockfamily.net/cedric/knoppix/
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/linux ... knopx.html

Pop the burned Knoppix CD into your CD drive, reboot and boot from the CD (you'll boot into Knoppix's GUI) and then move your data to a thumbdrive or another mounted drive. I've never personally done it before but I've read of some pretty badly damaged hard drives being recoverable using it.

Heck, I'd offer to do it for you if you don't feel up to it.

Sorry man, but... why didn't you ever even at least copy your pics into (for example) a Snapfish photo album so you could get prints of them? You could have downloaded your lost shots from them as well, not to mention having prints or photo books made. And besides, the photo books rock.

Charles:

That's not a bad idea at all. I'm in a similar situation where I haven't backed my photos up on a remote location. I've got them backed up to an external 500 GB drive but having them in a remote place would be nice. Does Snapfish have a total size limit? I've got like 4-6 GB of photos!

I don't recall there being a size limit. After all, what they want you to do is order prints of the photos you put up, so from their point of view making it so you can order tons of prints from them is in their best interest. If you do use them for prints, I can tell you that the quality is good and the price is cheap. But even if you don't order prints from them, I think you can use them as an image dump indefinitely.

I should've back-up'ed on my external HD. Online backup is too slow (my upload speeds are dismal). 40+ gigs of photos would take an eternity.

The HD is physically dead, so recovery software won't cut it. The platter is probably salvageable though, so I'm going to keep it around just in case I want to pony up for mechanical recovery.

I'm too depressed to take photos now. What's the point? It's just going to get deleted or broken or die.

8O Len, if you really feel this way, you should seek medical attention.

This hard drive crash has left an interminable void in my life. I feel stripped of my humanity. I am a discarded husk of my former self, manipulated by fate into nothing more then a vagary of existence. Bleak ... a forecast of endless rainstorms diluting the fractured remnants of my soul. Oh, there is life left in me yet. It just seems too futile to save what little is left. Like my hard drive, I'm broken. Like my lost photos, I will soon be forgotten too.

Damn you, Western Digital.
