For the first year, my tank sat right at about 82-84F with the peak temp in my house at about 80F in the summer. This summer, my tank is a minimum of 84F and even peaked up to 90F once doing some coral damage. I bought Coralife MH bulbs for my Coralife fixture when I replaced my lights in May, which coincidentally, were extremely cheap compared to other brands on Premium Aquatics.

My question is: Do different MH bulb brands give out more/less heat? Did I get what I paid for? Or should I be looking for other reasons?

MH is GOING to put out a LOT of heat, particularly the HQI. The best thing you can do is get some fans to blow across your water surface. It WILL cool it down.

You COULD get a chiller, but fans are MUCH cheaper :)

That being said. Im not a fan of Coralife MH lamps. I AM fond of Pheonix lamps though :) Same wattage, same surface area. I'm thinking they are going to put out the same amount of heat no matter what brand you buy.

Some MH bulbs do seem to run hotter then others, but the difference shouldn't be enought to account for the 6 degree swing you experienced. For example, if you're using fans, you might want to replace them. They get less effective as they get older.

Or at least clean them, you would be surprized how much airflow can decrease w/even a little dust on them
