next question:

where to go in orange county to get started? rock, salt/SW(premix), sand, etc. i'm right on the corner of santa ana, garden grove, fountain valley and westminster. no kidding.

I have not been shopping for a while (busy with a newborn), so make sure you get some recent feedback. Jeff's at Gardenia is sold, but his brother still run the place in Orange.

Tong's in Fountain Valley. Near I-405 and Magnolia?

There is a place right next to I-5 and Newport, window to the sea?

There is a few mom&pop, but most of them got run over by the big chains in past few years.

Back, oh, five or six years ago I got Mike King to bring in a few boxes of them, he was enthusiastic about them too. Got them and it turned out they were juiced, and he was unable to source them from anyplace where the results were likely to be any different.

Which was a damn shame. I still think these are the perfect fish for an acropora tank.

There's been nothing new on them since. I tried every contact I had at the time to see about getting a supply, but no dice. 'Course, it's been a few years now. Might be worth it for someone else to rattle the bars and see if they can't shake anything loose :D

'Fraid my knowledge of the area is outdated, I moved out of LA five years or so ago. Way back when, Jeff's is where I would have recommended.

so, i found tong's over in fountain valley and also a place called orange coast tropical fish (in buena park and fountain valley). OCTF had a number of *very* sick fish. the one in fountain valley was especially bad. that particular store had several starving fish. tong's fish looked slightly better but still not as healthy as i'd like to see.

i'm a bit disheartened after these experiences and worried i will not be able to find any healthy critters for my tank.

Spend a bit more cash and get cured live rock. Hand pick your pieces, and make sure they're exactly what you want... you only have a small space.

But if you find the absolutely perfect rock, and it's not cured, you can just add ammonia to the tank to speed up the cycle...

You could get a few gobies. anything bigger will outgrow the tank (reason to upgrade?)

Not much has really changed in the last few years.

I noticed on my 10 gal egg tank that it was hard to control the salt level. a little evaporation on a small tank would really spike the salt level. can you hide a 20 gal sump somewhere.
