Can I remove this pipe from the overflow while the return pump is on. I'm assuming water will continue to flow from the bulkhead at the bottom of the overflow into the sump but am not sure. I want to clean the pipe. I am also assuming that if I pull it out with the pump off, water will fill the sump and overflow.

While I'm at it, does anyone know why this pipe develops a pronounced "slurp" every once in a while. I suspect it has to do with the water level but am not sure. Thanks.

If I get a fish in the overflow and can't net him out, I'll pull the Durso so I can get him in the filter sock, so I'll run without a Durso every once and a while.

Caution is, can your sump handle the volume of water that's in the overflow tower?

As for the slurping, it's that the Durso is not tuned. Slightly enlarge the vent so the water level in the overflow remains constant.

I'm with the pervious poster. The only issue with temporarily removing the pipe is that all the water in the overflow will drain down into your sump. Just makes sure you have enough room down there and you should be fine. Otherwise you may have a real mess :)

I'll keep the return pump going if I pull the Durso to ensure the fish gets washed through as the overflow the clown goes in, probably has 15 foot horizontal run to the sump.

Since all systems are different, one of the things you need to do with a Durso is tune it. Start with a small hole and enlarge it in small steps until you find the sweet spot. When you hit it, the water level in the overflow chamber remains constant and the noise drops. Some will also put an airline then a valve to the cap and tune using the valve.
