So I got one of those 60ish gallon kiddie pools and made it into a tank for kicks and giggles. I put duel 96's over it (actinic and a 10000K) and a 150 gallon skimmer. The water flow is circular and I filled it with rock to make a live rock....maker lol. Figure I could sell it to locals considering I have such good stock of live rock to seed with. Anyways I was amazed at exactly how clear the view is in the 7ish inch deep water. So Im thinking about putting some fish in it just for kicks and giggles. I already had to put a redlip blenny in there due to his tendency to nip my sps corals. Any of you have some fish ideas? The lights are already off so Ill post some pics tomm.

Not to destroy your idea, but I'd calculate how much in electricity you're using on it before you go spending all your profits ;)

Anyways, I'm thinking of doing something similar with a 100g pond liner, it's not circular, but it's got a TON of surface area. Thinking of doing in my sunporch (SO's gonna love that! :D) however I am worried about how hot it can potentially get.

Yea Ive thought about the surface area prob and I figure I will make up with quality where price lacks. Most of the live rock Im seeding with has hard to find organisms on it like purple sponges that NEVER DIE lol. Theyve been exposed to air and still survive, theres also mermaids cup, red and white feather dusters, deep purple coralline and even green coralline that fluoresces, and so much more. So if I can get enough of this stuff to spread Ill be able to charge a bit more.

As far as evap over surface area I havent seen much evap and the ambient air temp is 90 while the water stays at 75. Its in my porch which is covered.

One week update. Tank is stable and coralline is begginning to spread. There has literally been no evap taking place due to Floridas premium 90 percent humidity. I added two clowns, one royal gramma, and 4 damsels, not to mention blenny with the tude. The royal gramma is very taken with the setup and has his own cave. The clowns dash around the tank with the damsels in a way Ive never seen clowns act, I think its due to the large surface area rather than depth. As far as the tank the Trates/trites are zero with zero ammonia, calcium is 400 and trace elements are being dosed and watched. I attribute the speedy coralline growth to balanced lighting and iodine from the shrimp I feed. (This is something I noticed in my grouper tank is the iodine in the shrimp appeared to make the coralline stunningly deep purple and grow faster. The moment I ceased feeding the grouper shrimp and switched to other foods lower in iodine the coralline seemed to drop in growth and color.

Looks good, what's the estimate size (gallons) of the kiddie pool?

Hmm Im not exactly sure as it wasnt labeled on the pool. However a 50 gallon Salt bag put the pool at 20 on the hydrometer when I usually shoot for 25. The real project I want to do is an outdoor green house covered pool reef with a mangrove filtration system. (not the primary filtration method of course.)
