I'm in the planning stages for a new reef tank which will be viewable from two sides. I want to make sure there is enough width so I can have an interesting aquascape. The current idea is something to the order of 36" wide. Is that overkill? It would make the build out a lot easier if I made the tank width smaller. My current tank is only 18" wide but is only viewable from one side.

Thanks for your opinions.

Most are happy when they go with a 24" width, but that's primarily for the flexibility that it offers to aquascaping and long-term growth.

My tank is 36" all around with a 6" corner overflow. Despite the side with the overflow, I still find it to be more than large enough for viewing.

I say go 30" :D

Thanks for the feedback Unarce. 30" sounds like a good compromise.

I've seen 24" tanks aquascaped from one side, and the way it was you could not force two sides in there, especially if you have any plating montipora or tabling corals. I would almost say 36" simply so you can stay as far away from the glass/acrylic as possible. My next tank is going to be somewhere between 36 & 48" wide.
