Have you looked at ocean force skimmers by MRC?

http://www.myreefcreations.com/product_ ... cts_id=347

Cheap, and with the pump under the skimmer it has a nice compact layout. It might be just me but it seems like Euroreef has dissappeared mostly from the major retailers in the hobby. I just think there are many skimmers out there that are built/work as well if not better and cost less then new euroreefs do. JMO

ER skimmers are good skimmers, you can get a lot better, and you can get some that are just about the same for less money, or ones that are better for a similar price.

I love the Coralvue Reef Octopus line myself, you can't find a better skimmer for the price, and the pro models with the askol pump are very good and compare to the high end skimmers.

ER changed their policy regarding dealers in the least year or so. They're doing direct sales now from what I hear.

Quite a few pump makers have the "low end" model with the pump under/in the skimmer, of the top of my head Bubble Master, Bubble King, Octopus Extreme, MSX (same thing as Octo), etc, not sure about the foot prints though.

Why would they have switched to direct sales though, doesnt make sense if they were doing well distributing through e-retialers.

I just think when you compair these to whats on the market now they dont compair well price wise.

The reason they have had to switch sales, is decline is sales. There is not much that differentiates ER from the other needlewheel skimmers, octopus, ASM, Aquaeuro etc, other than cost and the ER is more expensive for the same skimming ability. So the LFS's are selling other brands that are easier to sale.

it all comes down to price, ER charges a premium when I hate to say it this way I don't think they are a premium skimmer. They want Deltec/H+s etc prices, when they are not any better than an ASM skimmer.

If you where a dealer you'd have seen the letter they sent out. I did, but only due to a dealer showing me it in disbelief.

I personally cant stand policies such as "dont sell the general public" and "only sell to retailers" For instance Im only a few hours drive from ORA and they carry many things I would like (queen conchs). Unfortunately my Local LFS' charge a LOT more than they are paying and theres only two LFS for me to choose from that even order from ORA (Namely due to their 1000 dollar policy.) So what do I do? Nothing...noone else sells aquacultured queen conchs.

Blackcloudmedia,

I can understand your frustration, but you have to look at it from the wholesalers point. If ORA was willing to sell to you directly would you be willing to place the same size order as a LFS? If not, how does ORA get enough people to handle the small sales and packaging requirements? Plus, what happens to the rest of there business? When companies mix retail and wholesale, most of the time they loose out on the wholesale side because the other retailers do not like to have to compete against the wholesaler. There are a few wholesalers that I will not do business with just because of that. And when it comes to ORA they get there business from wholesaling, trying to sell retail would not be practical without raising prices, and then they could not compete in the wholesale market.

You just happen to live in a quasi-dead spot for the ornamental industry is all

Should ORA change their policy just for you? Or would you be willing to pony up for whatever thousands in fish you need to purchase before buying anything else?

Besides, wouldn't a drive a "few hours" negate any savings on a snail?

I didnt expect an answer to my question, I agree with Kim. I am not down on ER but why pay ER prices for a skimmer run off of a sedra pump when there are other brands that use equal or better pumps and also are constructed as well as ER for less money.

I have owned many ER over the years CS8-3, the cheaper blue lid models, and the RC135 I am using now. They do their job just fine. When they came out there was really very little competition for them. They were solid cast arcylic NW skimmers and hardly anyone else in the US market was doing this so charging what they were was resonable. The market IMO has changed from then. Now the US comsumer has many more skimmer options.

Not trying to Hijack th thread, sorry OP, I travel a lot around Florida and I could easily stop by and grab an order is all Im saying. Perhaps the snail example wasnt the best analogy. However I dont know if youve seen Tampa bay saltwaters rock they aquaculture but they only ship IN water so the shipping is nearly more expensive than the rock you buy. I could have stopped by to grab an order while I was in tampa once and they told me theywere no longer open to the public. Thats the kind of stuff that aggrivates me. And by the way sfsuphysics you have NO idea how crappy the ornamental trade is around here lol. Im expected to pay 30 dollars for a frag of acro that you guys in cali would use as a paperweight.

$30 for an acro so large it'd be a paperweight? May have missed your analogy there a bit.. that'd be a good sized acro! But over there you have to realize you can probably only have aquacultured stuff at "reasonable" rates (but there is the whole ORA sham so.. meh).. but you can't get local grown acropora (ie from the ocean).. so you get them from the same place we get them, but they have to fly further across the country for you which translates to $$$

But yeah I can dig it, there used to be a lighting store (online) that was based locally and you can make a will-call pick up, but then that changed and then their lights didn't seem as good.

I have a 300 gallon system at work with an ASM and ER in the sump sitting side by side. Despite the ASM being a much larger skimmer, the ER kicks its ass in terms of actual skimmate produced. I should take a picture.

Maybe it's a matter of properly sizing the pump to the skimmer body. ASMs always seem to have really big bodies on a modest sized pump.
