My large female maroon, whom I obtained in 1999, is MIA today. Since she eats like a pig, and begs for food, I assume the worst.

Uh oh... I'm afraid you may be correct. They don't usually sleep in.

Well, I would have to tear it apart to find her. I imagine she is dead and wedged behind some rock, and the other inhabitants are having a meal. I can sort of see where it might be, and there is a brittle star on the scene.

Did you check around the tank?

Oh, you mean she might have jumped? No. It is closed. No dead fish (unless the dog ate it).

Sorry. :(

Is there another maroon in the tank?

Yeah, a very small male who now looks lost. Her first mate died about a year ago, and I replaced the male and they have been happy for a year, so I don't think it was an ichthyocide. Becides, she was about 5 times larger.

If you have a brittle star then you may never find the body anyway.

I never found the male when it croaked. But it was a lot smaller.

Maybe a nitrate test could confirm your fears

My fear that never changing the water causes nitrates to accumulate?

While visiting my parents over Xmas, I looked through a box of old CDs. Wedged between two of the CDs was my favorite 6-line wrasse that I had bought for them. For reference, we had taken their tank down about 4 years ago and the fish had been missing for years before that. It was a long wait, but I felt a weird sense of peace at having solved such a long-forgotten mystery. It's really too bad that I water-boarded the brittle star all those years ago trying to get him to confess to the crime.
