I ordered this and I have a few questions.

Will the aluminum panel act as a heat sink that I can blow fans over to keep heat down?

I will have to play with the height to get good coverage and I will need to custom make a hood.

I ordered 3, one for each 2' of tank. They use optics so they should be very bright, but reduce coverage, so I may add another panel.

Any thoughts are welcome.

What dimensions are your tank? I think those look rather weak and spaced out. 1W will not provide a lot of punch.

For comparison, this is what someone made for a 12g tank. Each one of these LEDs is 3W so the intensity is much greater. This one is barely capable of doing SPS from what people are reporting.

LED technology should be progressing very quickly in the next few years. Apparently ballparks are leading a huge push to get LED light fixtures for night games to replace the MHs...certainly some likely benefits for the aquarium field there. 8O

I saw a very nice one that was being sold, used, for about $1K. I think when they come down a factor of 3 in price, they will be competitive. Certainly it will make for a less expensive electric bill.

That's a remarkably decent price.

Actually they use optics(lenses) and they are quite powerful. An optic increases their power up to 46 times for up to a meter depending on the lenses angle. Three watt leds with optics would probably burn corals in their hot spots(under a direct beam).

This guy is doing well with them so far even without optics:

The place that sells them does not make them and the company that makes them is in China. Orbitec will have a very difficult time suing them. At worst the company can just remove that the sale of them is for corals/aquarium use. There are many other LEDs available that are foreign made. If you do a search on YouTube and type in Aquarium led lighting many will have links to sites where to get them.

It comes with a 2 year warranty, so If they burn out after 2 years you can just but a new panel for the cost of the halide bulbs you would have had to buy anyway. I'll test the spread once I get them and then I will decide if I need to add another panel or two.
