One feature many heaters come with is the ability to fail in the On position and cook your tank. The safest is to use a seperate temperature controller (like a Ranco) to turn the heater on/off. Otherwise, consider two smaller heaters.

I've always liked the Won titanium heaters. No worries about breaking these since they're not made out of glass. :)

<-- i also use a titanium heater with an external thermostat. I dont know.. I just feel lie it gives you better control over the actual temp that you want to dial in.

Won titanium heaters ave been known to have issues with there controller failing. I love the jager heaters, I set mine at 82 and plug it into my duel stage controller that is set to 80, this way if the controller fails the heater will shut itself off at 82 and the likelyhood of both the controller and and heaters controller failing is slim.

I'm with Ben, Ebo Jager... honestly I don't give a toot about heaters brand name, just I would suggest multiple smaller ones as opposed to one large one, at least for the completed set up tank. Simply so
1: If one fails no biggy
2: Place them in different parts of your sump so you don't have a "hot zone"
3: If one breaks (as you found out very easy :D) replacing them isn't an issue. But then again for the tank size you're doing 300w isn't a bad size, 500w heaters are overkill IMO.

I had a won bros digital and the temp was fluctuating like crazy. I switched to a Vta Aqua titianium(not digital) and it keeps the temp+/- 1 degree F.

i ended up in the end getting a 200W and a 100W. i will more than likely put the 200 in the overflow end of the sump and the 100 on the return.....

both are none digital. seem to holding the temps well. currently the 200 is in a 40, and the the 100 is in a 20. if they work this well in my new tank i'll stay with it. if not, ill go into something more controllable.....
