:welcome:

I am the last person you want to give you plumbing advice-trust me on this  but here's a link to a good thread showing standard plumbing for a big tank.

If I get you right you are trying to make a normal tank a RR ready by drilling for bulkheads right? If so yes you can drill holes towards the top and avoid the long pipe as long as the tank isnt tempered glass on the sides. Most just has the tempered bottoms. You need some room for the plumbing inside the tank though, as you need a strainer for the overflow so it doesnt take down snails and fish with the water. A snail stuck in an overflow can lead to a nice mess. You can see this type of overflow here,

Drilling a hole towards the top is a good idea provided that it is not made from glass. The most important thing is to prevent any overflow after the installation of the pipe inside the tank. Anyway, you did a good job also I like the flowery design of your walls, they complement the tank beautifully.

Or you can make an hob overflow from pvc pipe and avoid drilling the tank.

A normal tank is just needs some pipes that could be setup under the tank. You just need to make it better for the distribution of the water from the pump. This could be the most important part of it.
