Is it always nessasary to add two that are of different sizes, as in one bigger then the other. I added two black ocellaris to my nano at work as juveniles, assuming one would out grow the other and become the dominate female. It seems after almost 2 years together they are almos tthe same size and one dominates the other into the corner. Yet the fins are not injured at all the pecking seems a bit rough for mating or deciding who the female is deal. Good thing the tank has a lid on it or one might throw the other out of the tank. I am thinking of taking one home and then adding a new young black ocellaris to each tank.

I had two juvie cap clowns. For about a year, they were growing at the same size, but one would dominate the other. After the first year or so, one grew bigger (into the female), and there was less bullying. Maybe your's is just taking their sweet time to decide who is who :P

thanks Len, I hope thats the case. Like I said thier fins are fine, but one is looking sad and his jaw seems a bit messed up. For awhile they were locking jaws and fighting a bit, now one hovers in the corner and the other charges him.

I've got 2 ocellaris clowns, one has maxed out at 3", the other is way behind at 2". They're always swimming together and I have never, not once, witnessed either take a nip at the other. Just waddle back and forth together in the back corner of my tank.

Worst case scenario, it is possible that somehow both were already female which is irreversible. But a few things go against that theory... they were probably tank bred, kept in a large group from day one, and introduced into your aquarium at the same time. The most likely cause of them both being female is if they both happened to be wild caught and already females. I read that in the aquarium with 2 clowns, they can pair up and transform sex in as little as a month... so with 2 years and going, seems that any change should've already happened.

If you're up for it, I'd try the separating thing that you mentioned. FWIW, the clown I've had for 6 years isn't bright orange nor is it black, it's black at the top and fades into bright orange at the bottom, so I don't know which of the two it really is, perhaps just a good ol mutt ocellaris. The male is your standard issue bright orange ocellaris.

Good luck!

Well I paired my last Ocelaris pair by starting with two juv. fish (had the female for about 10 years before I broke down the tank and was out of the hobby for a year) and my sons clarkis were done by adding both as juv. fish also. In the clarkis case there is no question who is the boss both were the same size a few years ago and now one is a giant.

Ill give the black ocellaris' pair a bit more time, or maybe Ill bring my camera to work and take a shot of my nano so you can see the pair.

son of a bi---! I've got all of my fish in a 30g holding tank while I work on my 75g. Went down to feed them, and that 6yo clown I was talking about? Missing. After an exhaustive search, including the floor, I found him dead, pinned behind a rock  I don't know how it happened, all the other fish are happy and the rocks didn't shift, but that's irrelevant. I'm just bummed!

:sigh: well, looks like my other ocellaris is in for a sex change once I get the 75 up and running.

Sorry to hear, its always a bummer when we lose anything. I still havent desided what to do about my pair. I am thinking of getting some picassos and miss matching them since I read the pairing picassos doesnt mean you get picassos in return.

Yeah the picassos are sweet. The snowflake clowns I am not sure I like, they look to me more mutated then the picasso coloring.

Yeah lol. I just set up a seahorse tank so now with 4 tanks running I need to conserve my budget a bit. Although I think I can float a pair of picassos on my credit card for a month lol.

May I ask where you found them, and for how much? (…or is that a closely held secret) I probably won’t get any, but man they are cool.

I havent been looking enough but with some notice when available my LFS would be able to get me them in, and he gives me good deals. Then again I walked in there the other day for some glue and left with two zoa frags for my sons tank and an aqua delight for my tank lol.

For pricing ideas the snowflakes are more expensive, someone is selling a pair of snowflakes on RC right now for $500 + shipping.

Depending on the markings about $100 per picasso is the going rate.
