ok I have a aga single return 90 gal tank I want to increase me water flow, going to get a mp40-w will it alone be ebough flow in this tank i currently have a maxi jet 12 maxi 9 and a maxi 12 with mod. I also have a mag 12 that I was going to make a over the back closed loop but if I can just use the mp40 I would rather do that. I want to be able to keep a little of everything sps lps softies all of it. maybe just the mp40 then add a mp20 later will they synch together? what does every one think

I would add the MP40 and keep the MaxiMod. Lose the MJ 9 and 12. The closed loop will not be necessary. I wouls also suggest another MP40 later, you can just ramp it down if the flow is too strong.

I ran two mp40w's in my 58 that was all SPS and it was perfect. I have two on my new 160 and it's not enough IMO. I plan to add two more soon, and that would be ideal. I think in a 90 I would like one on each end. As Dan mentioned though you can do one and keep the maxi mod until you can get a second, if you decided you needed a 2nd. Since you are doing LPS, SPS, and Softies 1 and the maxi mod might be fine.

I run 2 MP40's and a Tunze Stream(1875 GPH) along with about 1000GPH of return flow. I have a 6' tank and I run the MP40's on full blast opposite eachother and the TS is alternating from highest to lowest on a single controller along the back of the tank. I plan on adding 2 more on the back glass to replace the TS.

I have recently cranked my MP40 to the high setting and have noticed that it gets very HOT! Is this normal?

Yes.

You cannot hold your hand on the pump for too long without burning it. Just think, other pumps add that heat to your water.

What does everyone think is the best setting on this pump? I try to keep mine on the reef crest mode (high speed) with the nightime mode activated. Only thing is that I think that it really doesn't seem to keep the water moving rapidly.

I use mine in the same setting no night time mode though, it will bounce between med-high and I know when both are on full I can hear the water moving much more rapidly. I think thats the best mode, for my set up.

When I had two on my 58 I ran them as a slave and master both full power pulsing back and forth which was right for that tank.

I wonder if the night mode is even a good idea? It seems that the polyps are further extended at night and one would think this would be the best time to have rapid water movement to further enhance feeding...

I do not use night mode either. Not really necessary IMO. I have been using mine on max Lagoon mode. They are not master or slave either, which I feel makes it even more random. When I go to a smaller tank I will probably use Reef Crest mode, it just doesn't seem to work well on a 6' long tank. The center of the tank doesn't get enough flow in reef crest mode. There is no best mode overall, just one that works best for you. Some tinkering is necessary.
