Hey everybody,

I recently started noticing a sandy colored residue in the bin that I use for mixing my saltwater. I use reef crystals. I have never seen this residue before. This last water change I noticed it when the salt was mixed in and sat over night with a power head for circulation. Next time I will check and see if the residue is there before I add the salt.

Have you guys noticed this as well?

My lfs indicated that it was ok and they get it as well. Something to do with minerals?

Anyhow I thought it might be my resins in my RO but they are only 3 months old.

Just wondering........

Color me clueless, I've never had that happen. Are you making things a batch at a time and cleaning the container in between? I've had algae grow in an uncovered container I kept constantly filled with saltwater even though it was in indirect light.

They're called diatoms, it's a natural algae.
Do you rinse out your bucket with regular water or RO/DI?
Either way they can also be airborne.

I sometimes get the beige residue on the bottom of the bucket as well. It seems to happen right after the water fully settles. It also happens when I use IO and it never happened when I used Coralife salt(my tank looked like crap when I used this salt). I think it is just the heavy minerals settling, I stir it up before I use it.
