I have my tank in my downstairs living room. We are planning to have an electrician come in and install some recessed lighting. This is going to require them to cut allot of holes in the sheetrock ceiling to run the wires and the lights. When they are done they will patch and spackle the holes they made. I will them have to paint the whole ceiling to finish the job.

My questions are the following.

I can place a drop cloth over the tank so keep the dust and mess out of the tank when they do the work. But how bad is this for a 29G tank? Should shut the skimmer off for a few days? Should I shut the skimmer off when I paint? Anyone have experience with this? I dont want to move the tank. The tank has been running for 3 months and I have fish in corals in there now.

I would use plastic, and would keep everything running as long as it's not a fire hazard.

I used a plastic drop cloth and let everything run as usual.

I am currently finishing my basement. My tank has been up for about a year, and I was worried about the same thing. I have been sanding drywall, cutting and sanding wood, painting, and staining. Last week the whole house was a huge cloud of dust. Knock on wood, the tank seems fine. I think drywall spackle is mostly calcium, so hey maybe it helps :)
