My stepfather is able to receive Destilled Water for free from his job I'm not sure why exactly but he works in a hospital and they need it for the machines or something and they have "Tap and Distilled" taps. His friend, Who's a reefer, Used to use it before he got his RO/DI unit and atm I don't have the money to shell out and I'm using tap water atm and having algae problems (which could be attributed to the NY Water Supply) so I was wondering if Destilled water was as good as RO/DI unit and fine to use from now on for water changes and top off?

I used distilled water for quite a while on a small tank before I invested in an RO/DI unit. I would highly recommend the distilled water over the tap water. Try it for a few months and you may be amazed at the results. City water contains chlorine, fluoride and other chemicals which are terrible for reef tanks!

Just make sure that the distilling equipment doesn't have copper tubing in it.
