My new Orphek LED light

Just got my Orphek LED light fixture. I thought I would share an early review of this sexy looking light.

Came packed nicely. The company is based in Israel. It claims it's LED and lens technology were designed by their own engineers specifically for reef applications. The fixtures are still assembled in China.

The timer unit is a bit complicated. This was the one part of the system that was not designed specifically for this application.

The fixture is very nicely built. The acrylic cover has a nice, smooth finish.

The fixture is a bit high right now while I acclimate since I am replacing a 250MH and the Orphek is much brighter.

How noisey are the cooling fans?

I am waiting for a fixture to come out that I can put on my 24G cube without the wall brackets. Something like a Sunpod.

The fixture really does look nice.

It has two fans in the fixture. They can be heard, but they are not particularly noisy. Supposedly this version has quieter fans than the original. They are nowhere near as noisy as my variable icecap fan was on my MH horizontal pendant.

The timer unit also has a fan, but that is in my cabinet and cannot be heard next to my return pump and skimmer.

Don't tempt me, I'd get into a whole world of trouble. Plus, the Giesemann doesn't look bad either.

I was about to make my annual purchase of MH and CF replacement bulbs which cost $200. I figured that with the lifespan of these LED bulbs coupled with the power savings and significantly reduced heat production, I'll come out way ahead on this deal.

My rationalization worked.

CF... CF=compact fluoros? Which I call CFLs.

I buy cheap bulbs, from Lowe's. Still waiting for LED to gain wavelength/spectrum ground.

I'll be glad when they come out with a little smaller version. My 24G has 150W MH now. That's plenty of light. But I would like to elimate the heat and lower the power consumption.

I'm sure more choices will be available shortly. I'm holding out.

Bulbs are damned expensive...

What is the estimated life of the LED fixture?

I think a lot of the better quality LED bulbs are like 50,000 hours aren't they?

Yep, LED are supposed to last 50000 hours. I could see them lasting much longer.
