What is the best temperature to keep a FOWLR at?

I have read in a few places that 77-78 is ideal but a few others that recommend 80-83, they say it is because the majority of fish in the marine trade that is closer to their natural habitat which averages 80-89.

Depends on what species you're keeping. Most tropical fish would do best in the 76 to 82 range. 89 is insanely high for any species. I would keep it at the lower end of the spectrum since bad things happen more rapidly at higher temps.

What Len said, particularly the bolded. What fish are you planning on keeping? I assume you aren't a rare fish nut but ya never know...some of these guys are from deeper or less tropical waters.

I am just planning on keeping 2 Clowns, I figure they are hardy enough for me. I am not planning on keeping a high temp just thought I would ask what the prevailing wisdom is on the subject. The thermometer i got with my tank was showing awfully high since the heater was supposed to be set at 78 degrees, got a new thermometer inside the tank and showing the correct temp now.

How do you know which one is reading the "correct" temperature? Have you calibrated either one to a more accurate standard?
