Orange Ball Corallimorphs from St. Croix

Hi Gang,

I'm just back from the USVI (St. Croix) where I was lucky to see two orange ball corallimorsphs - my first ever!

I'll post some pix when I get mine edited but in the meantime am curious if these have been kept in aquaria.

Seeing as how you've only seen two in the wild in all your dives, what's the likelihood of these guys showing up in the aquarium trade?

Well maybe not from that island but a heck load of people keep Pseudocorynactis. I have both Atlantic and Pacific ones in my tank and have had them for over 10 years now. In fact I don't think I have any local friends that do not have any in their tanks

Hey James, I have had ones that look exactly like that in my tank before, they come in as hitchhikers. I'd say they are a fairly uncommon hitchhiker but certainly not rare. I have never seen a hitchhiking Scutus snail in person, but seen plenty of these, if that gives any kind of perspective.

I just found one in a tank the other day that has bluish green tips instead of orange, but otherwise looks identical to the one in the photo you posted.

Was this a night dive?

so what's the difference between this and an orange ball anemone? i have several in my tank that came in as hitchhikers on my live rock from the lfs.

Well who knows - common names can be used for just about everything

Corynactis and Pseudocorynactis both come in an orange variety it sounds like from the above posts. So where was your live rock from - indo-pacific or caribbean?

Yup true, but, all mine that came from ATL rock looked JUST like that one

haha the lfs... :wink: i decided when i was researching what creature they were that they came from indo-pacific because supposedly the indo-pacific ones are open at night and the caribbean ones are not...and i have seen mine open in the dark...now this conclusion may be incorrect as this information came from one website and i don't even remember what website it was! lol

Mine (both) open during both day and night. Neither live under the light in my tank but rather caves and protected areas, like my overflow and sump.
