Seaweed

My current difficulty is with seaweed. I've tried a few without much success, either my fish ate them, my crab posse stomped them or they weren't compatible with my environment. I'm considering a number of variables such as tidal area and water temp but I'm also wondering if plant life from the sea is similar to plant life on land so far as light requirements. Do they consume CO2 and oxygenate the water?

Could you give us the scientific name of the types you are interested in keeping, or the types you have had no luck with, or both? It would help me with trying to provide you with accurate information, if i have any.
