I have just started planing a bare bottom 60 gal cube (24" cubed). Build thread is here topic160518.html Not much to see yet. The plan is for mostly SPS with a few clams and LPS on the bottom. I would like to give them room to become nice sized colonies. I have actually considered getting more than one frag of each and putting them near each other to get a larger colony appearance. I do not want any monti's. For the LPS I was thinking along the acan route.

So what I am looking for is suggestions of type and total number. If you can make a suggestion along with a picture that would be great.

OK I will start. These are pieces I had in my 150 and would like to have again.

I want this coral or something similar.

The one right in the center. It went by Chip's Acro at the time. The one in the back left would be cool too.

I was told this was a blue tort.

Had.

I lost those during my majano anemone disaster.

I think I bought those off of someone at RC. Their selling livestock threads usually have a good mix of stuff available. Always a good place to start looking.

I think one of my corals matches the hairy green acro(Chips acro) not 100% and I have a small birds nest, not pink tho. I do have a pink coral, not sure if its a pocillopora or a stylophora though - its had strange growth characteristics since I got it as a frag, and I recently made a frag of it after inadvertantly breaking a branch

RC members have incredibly rediculous prices for frags these days - everything is "rare" according to them...it very well may be, but 5 frags for $300 bucks is outlandish

There are plenty of good deals too. But yeah, some guys ask ridiculous prices.

I havent ordered from this guy, but his prices are very reasonable and he has some nice specimens -I just havent had the cash to make a worthwhile order yet...

Don't see how you could go wrong at those prices.

This guy has a 5 for $150 including shipping deal. Some of it looks pretty nice too.

Thanks for the link. I will have to remember that guy when the time comes. If the LFS in New Orleans is still running he had good prices on frags. Sometimes cool stuff and sometimes not.

So what are you planning to use for Ca replenishment?

If that one in the middle is a green slimer or acropora yongei.. IME, it grows fast and will be stripping that 60 gallons of water pretty quickly.. whereas the blue tort grows slow as hell and is a far more pretty specimen. I would keep them far apart myself.

..But then I would not keep another green slimer unless it was the only SPS that I planned to keep.. or maybe if I had a big tank that I wanted to fill out in a hurry.

That blue tort used to go for big bucks here about ten or twelve years ago. I don't know if it is because of the price or the slow growth but it is one of my favorites.
Hopefully I like it just because it is a good looking stick.

I also had the pink birds nest once and my beef with it is that if you inadvertently break it (like I did with a falling rock) it takes forever for it to look natural again.
I suppose they all can be smashed by a dumbass with a rock but being that the birds nest is so fragile and tends to grow in a round ball, it just looks a lot worse to me when smashed.
But then I never had it with a BB. You could probably let the current rip and it would likely grow a whole lot less fragile than mine ever did.

I am going to start out with supplaments then add a kalk stirrer.

I do not think it is a slimer. I had a green slimer and it was much greener and the polyps were not so bushy.

I think the torts are still pricy.

Yes the pink birds nest is fragile, but I still like them.

The pink stylophora was probably the brightest thing I had in my tank at one point- love any stylo.

I don't really like milles for some reason- they grow fast and get huge easy though.

When you say no montis- you mean digitata? there's always room for some nice encrusting ones.

I had an Oregon tort and a cali one back in the day. The Oregon is the best- its a nice solid blue. Grows incredibly slow. I got mine from Upscales in Oregon 3/4 inch for $50; think they still have them for that price. Yours looks pretty much like it though.

Local clubs are the best bet- if you can find someone that has an old tank and good taste!

I'll probably buy a few pricy frags from somewhere online. I never had a chalice but the original tyree watermelon looks the nicest to me, based on pictures. Still seems kind of expensive.

No monties at all. There are some really cool ones, but with the limited space I want to be a bit more picky on what I put in the tank.

I have had some success in past tanks gluing encrusting monties to the back glass. That way they don't take up any space and covers the back wall with something besides corraline. Just and idea. I think I might do that again in my 38.
