Pods and Filter socks

As you guys might know. I am having a new sump built and am reaching out for some ideas when it comes to filter sock's. I have currently 5 filter socks on my system at the same time and need to change every 2 days. My problem is that i seem to be killing all my pods due to them being stuck on socks when i put them to wash. I want to implement a different setup without filter socks where my pods can populate without being stuck in my socks. I've heard some ideas on going with a sump with no socks but i want to hear yours.. My other issue would be detritus in the sump. My sump will be a High Flo Sump so i will have to rely on my skimmer to remove most of the detritus in the sump .

I told you about my 24 inch by 12inch socks I have 2 and change every 5 to 6 days... I have a 125 sump... Priceless not to have to change those socks every 2 days... I got them from emperor aquatics $10 each..And I think it helps water quality also not to have to change them so often..

True. but my main concern is the pods. will still have the same problem. i no longer have the time to sit and remove the pods manually

Oh I didn't read the whole thing.. You don't want socks...My bad..I tried to go barefeet before with a big skimmer on a 55 and I didn't like not having that clarity and seemed harder to keep levels in line...

I don't ever have that problem I don't know why though..I have 3 different types of pods.. I think it maybe the way my coral bandits reproduce so much.. And my cleaner shrimp also..

David, I don't use any socks on my system and I have lots of pods in both my tank & my sump/fuge. I have 6 baffles in my sump -- not a microbubble in sight --and the detritus in the sump gathers between the 2nd & 3rd baffle and I siphon it out of there monthly (or so...) with a piece of rigid airline tubing attached to regular airline.
I dislike the thought of losing so many pods & baby pods to the socks and don't believe you can get them all off the socks by hand picking or even rinising them in a bucket of SW.
Then again I don't have SPS in my tank, so the extra nutrients don't bother my corals too much and I also have that big ass skimmer going...lol

I dont use the Filters socks either ,but as you know my tank is now 99.9% LPS

Gate valve your drain just have a backup drain in case it gets clogged.

you could set up your sump to have some sort of filter floss that the water passes thru before getting returned to the display. It would catch all the detritus and pods are less likely to get stuck in it.

Im sure you would have to change it often, not sure if floss is reusable or expensive tho.

I told him that already (the siphon method) but he's too much of a pansy to do it. So he's thinking about 8 baffles now :lol2:.

I have a similar problem but with a foam/sponge block before the final baffles that enter the pump chamber of my sump. I have to remove and clean it in salt water every monthy as it gets very gunked up but it always has pods stuck to it . I have yet to figure out how the pods get through the sponge into the main tank but somehow they do.

So do the baffles alone stop detritus returning to the main tank for most of you ?

I honestly don't think it's such a big deal as pods reproduce so rapidly and the biggest limit to their population would likely be available food. The biggest down side to socks is you loose the built in fuge that an overflow is. In my system even without socks my skimmer would pull most of my pods out.

In your proposed setup how do you plan on getting around that? If you can keep pods from entering your filter socks you're just going to end up with pods in your skimmer cup. Your best solution for maximum pods is going to be a skimmerless setup. Make the vast majority of your sump a macro filled fuge. Use baffles on the incoming to trap detritus and the macro as a pod haven / nutrient export.
