Awibrandy, I was just trying to make some fun too. I welcome any suggestion that can help me to make my tank better and I am not a sensitive guy, so don't worry. I am going to buy an RO/DI unit, actually one guy has already made an offer. Good business man. :) I'd like to thank everybody that helped me. MR rocks!

please don't take my advice the wrong way
don't think that you can just use tap water. Get an R.O. use it all the time, but if you already set up the tank with tap water you don't have to tear it down and start all over. There are things you can do.

Thanks Devious! I totally forgot rfc's thread. I was the last to post on his thread. I love his tank it is gorgeous.

Still would like to know if he is still using tap water, and is he running any media to combat p04, and others.

Sean, I totally understood what you said. I for one did not start my 155 with brand new lr & water. I used half of the old water in my tank, and all of my lr. But I incorporated a pair of phosban reactors. One is running phosar, the other is running carbon changed out monthly. Picking up a Hanna meter this weekend, for now my liquid test kit says my p04 is at somewhere between 0 & 0.25. It has been 6 months since I started using an RO/DI, and the reactors. Was doing weekly water changes of 40g, until this month when life got to busy and I got lacks. Paying for that one too...

I'd like to ask rfc, What is the condition of your tank, are you still using tap water, and are you running a phosban reactor?

Hi Awibrandy,

When I started my 29G tank up I filled it with tap water and added salt and a powerhead to let it mix up. After the 2 months I started using distilled water from whole foods. I did that for another couple of months and then got tired of lugging 10 gallons a week up to my aparment so I purchased RODI unit on ebay.

I dont run phosban, just a skimmer and a fluval canister with carbon which I clean every week and change the carbon every 2 weeks. I do a 5 gallon water change every sat/sunday. I dont have a heavy bioload in my tank, just 2 clowns, 1 firefish, 1 watchman goby, and I have a relatively large sump/tank ratio. I guess all of that helps keep things in check.

Guess I got lucky. I have never had a problem with algea growth or phosphates....knock on wood :)

Key words, started using "distilled water, then RO/DI", don't have a heavy bioload, weekly water changes, skimmer, and topped off with biweekly carbon changed out.
Great work rfc! I applaud your efforts to keep your animals happy. And more so for your honesty, as I feel that our sharing experiences is what helps us to grow.
