I must say that there is alot of that going on.i have gotten rid of my setup only because im moving soon, but all in all it hurts me alot looking at the vacant space along the wall where my tank once stood:sad2: it meant alot to me it defined who i was...."show me your setup and ill tell you who you are". I go to my folks house to get my saltwater fix and to sadly watch the fish i gave to them bunch up in the corner like there saying c'mon take me home now.its rough and i know that it effects me and my family everyday,My 21/2 year old constantly asking wheres the fish?....so sad.

Quit. Don't listen to addicts.
I wish I had your strength, I've been contemplating breaking my tank down for awhile. Just like an addict, while selling off all my reef stuff I'm checking the For Sale forum on RC to see if there's any good deals on reef equipment!

I should go back to African Cichlids or better yet, get a dog. At least a dog will get me outside.

Bravo Chris, spend time with your family, spend time on yourself. We're insane for spending so much time on fish! When I'm retired and my kids don't call anymore I'll have time for this hobby. Until then I'm living life.
Give me a call next time you have a house project to do, I'll bring the beer.

I'm not quitting because i lost love for the hobby. Nature has, and always will intrigue me. I am "quitting" because frankly, raising a family and things of that nature, are more important. That is something that will take preference over ANY hobby. I can't rule out that in the future i won't return, but after 7 years, and the loss of my first fish, it sort of made the transition easier.

I love watching other peoples tanks and i will hope to be able to dive the reefs in the future. The nature will always be in me till i die.

So i am not a quitter, lol, i am just trying to reproduce, lol.

Hob-by (hob-ee) Noun
1- An activity or interest pursued for pleasure and relaxation and not as a main occupation

I'm not sure what posts you've been reading Gene, but a bunch of the folks who have recently gotten out are leaving for reasons not having to do with reefing itself. A number of them have moved or are getting ready to move, or saving to buy homes...most of those folks are planning on setting up a reef when they get situated.
And not a one of them is happy about not having their reef tank within eyeshot...but they are saving a whole lot of money by not having a tank set up, and a lot of precious time also. Sometimes you have to give up something else to reach a goal.

I applaud each of them for having the sense to take their tanks down to attain those goals so they may start again in the future on solid ground.

I don't think it's about equipment, or the complications involved with reefing..we have MR & the great people here to help us work through the complications. We may gain experience over time but this is a labor intensive hobby and if you think you're just going to be able to set up a reef tank and maintain it for 5 minutes a day, you're in the wrong hobby.

Chris clearly said that he was planning to take a break from the hobby anyway and this incident simply pushed up his timeline by a month or two.
The man has a plan (don't doubt that for a second), and if he's says he'll be back - he will be.

Will we miss him and the others? Certainly, but only for as long as they are gone, and in the meantime we will re-read the wise words they have left behind for us and when they return we will welcome them home with open arms.

Be happy for them, they are working on making their dreams come true.

As someone who is on the verge of taking A break from the hobby its gotten quite expensive. Im not talking all the bells amnd whistles but the core thing we all need, electric. I had a recent loss of alot of fish due to ick and it will kill me to sell everything off but in the end thats more money and time to spend with the family. Pedro pretty much summed it up niocely. Now i just need to actually do it LOL It is a very hard decision to make.

Kathy, is it offending u what i said....

To be honest with you I spend about $1 a month after a full investment into my seahorse tank. About $500.....(thats not money)

I dont doubt that the man has a plan. I am not denying anything. It is just a suggestion from a fellow reefer to continue this hobby with some thing that might be a an eye candy + a cheap cost and labor.

Kathy I never said that 5 min a day is enough to keep a reef tank....U said it to the wrong reefer. I encourage people to spend more time near their tank...

However, if time is something that cannot be waisted then IT IS a good idea to quite for a while to raise a family and avoid this extra worry.

I just think that moving, time for your family, saving money, are not good enough excuses to quite this hobby after so much effort was invested.

Smaller, simpler, does not mean bad and ugly.

Thats y its called husbandry. U are a person who is responsible from many important duties. 1 extra duty never hurt any1.

Also if some people are hiding their true feelings that they are tired of SW fish and corals (not PEDRO :teeth:) then it is their responsibility to quit before the hobby turns into a burden. ( I DONT WANT TO OFFEND ANY HERE)

MR GOT ME ADDICTED. U ARE ALL RESPONSIBLE.:)

Damn. Drperetz tried to get people to stay and now we got two more people thinking about quitiing.... Anyways you have to also look at a guy like me who just recently started. So while some may leave.... (and we hate to say good-bye)... more will join.

Well I thought about quitting just before christmas 2006 because of the water leak I had. Dang crab :irked: Then some good friends talked me into staying, but one suggested a downgrade to a nano. I listened to him and look at my tank now. I love it more than if I had a 2000 gallon tank, ease of maintenance and my favorite fish I am very happy. So a downgrade may be just what some need, and a sell off and get out is what others may need. What I want to emphasize is to respect their decision be supportive of them and give them their options.

If YOU know, you love the reefs, taking a break is just an initial step to understand that you just cant live without it.

i think dr pretez's intentions are not to disrespect anyone. n feel free to correct me, doctor. :) he merely was trying to discourage fellow reefers to not get out of the hobby just when something goes wrong with the tank; while there are many good reasons to: take a break, down grade or leave forever and should be respected and supported for their decision.

You entirely missed my point Gene. It seems to me that what these folks are doing by leaving is a positive thing for them.
Calling them quitters is offensive.

wow, very well said superstaaaar....Hobby does not = Priority.

Priorties change for all of lifes reasons...

Gene, i think the prob here is that ur trying to start a thread about complcated systems being the cause of reefers to abandon thr reefs, but headline it quitters..cant be both, but kathys take is extremely accurate...
