Most people are ignorant of the fact that they have a parasite(s) in their tank. Most (not all) stores that sell corals, sell parasites also (check out petco), they are more irresponsible than the naive hobbyist since they should know better.

At fragswaps I have actually pointed out redbugs and flatworms to people and they still have a hard time seeing them (I've been wanting to do a seminar of parasite ID and removal for awhile, maybe at one of the upcoming fragswaps, :) ). Which goes to the fact that most parasites of corals are extremely well adapted at camoflage and stealth. They are also very hard to eradicate from a frag or a tank. Most times the corals suffer from the treatment and potentially die if it is not healthy at the start.

I believe that it is the individual hobbyist responsibly to not become infected with parasites, NOT the seller or trader. It's the "other guys fault" is a cop-out since every reefer should have a QT tank and the tools nessesary to battle parasites on frags before the enter the QT tank.

NEVER should frags/corals be just placed in ones main display. Learning and abiding by this simple "rule" has made my tank as successful as it is. Following this rule made me avoid the AEFW epidemic surrounding the SPS game.

By the way, I see this thread going bad real fast, and potentially being closed. I hope that will not be the case since maybe some valuable knowledge can be shared, :) .

I'll admit I DON'T QT.

Even though I have all the stuff to do so. I'm just lazy I guess. Luckily the worst thing I've gotten is some aptasia and planaria flatworms. I know I should, but I just don't.

That being said, I am quite careful of most of my purchases. I'll look at a fish for a while, then come back a day or two later and see how it is. I'll ask to see it eat, and watch how it behaves. If it's okay, chances are I'll take it.

Frags, I just put a couple of drops of FWE in the bag before I acclimate it.

Well that is not good. A warning is respectful and just the nice thing to do.

I was going to give the talk/seminar at the last fragswap but decided instead to talk about bacteria.

I dont want to create another thread to offend any 1 .:irked::p

But my concern for people selling hard to keep or very evil animals that require special care. It happend to me when I was a complete noob and wouldnt want any 1 here to go through the same experience. Also if some 1 tells u that these is something wrong with the animal, dont rush into the purchase thinking the seller is being honest with you. Its important to avoid headaiches.

2 weeks ago, I saw a mystery (redsea) wrasse in a store on ave u and east 14thst.

It was $60..... But ofcourse it was sick. It waasnt ick but prob. marine velvet.

I thought of purchaing the fish to save it from the disease but didnt really feel like loosing $60 to fish heaven.

The point is that they wanted to mask the disease with reducing the price...I told them that the fish is sick and was asking them to reduce the price but they were not cooperative.

you should have asked for manager to give you the fish to try & save it, forget the discount. chances of a healthy fish maikng it is low enough, let alone a sick one.

People who knowingly sell livestock that is sick is a violation of the sites rules. If you have experienced this make sure it reflects in their feedback. For the most part I would also say it is buyer beware. The buyer needs to check out the fish and coral before they purchase it. All livestock should be quarantined, treated or dipped accordingly.

I will agree to that its the buyers responcibility to be aware of all the parasites and diseases but what if it is unnoticed, what if ur unaware. a noob. What then. I know at least 4 people frm this site and otehrs who left this hobby cause they coulnt bare with the loss due to some bug disease on their acros. That was sold to them from their reef buddies who found out about it prior to their sale.

disease

a business is going to sell reguardless, not that it makes it right, but they do have to make money to stay open. and really it's the buyer's responsibility to take the proper step's to ensure the health of their own tank. and qt or dip what ever you buy. and as far as being a noob and buying ting's that's their own fault, been there done that, you live and hopefully learn

what kind of bag grisha.. Gucci or fendi lol
:funnypost

People made fun of Mr. Young at Aquatic Treasures, yet he was the most honest retailer I have ever had the pleasure of doing business with. He qt his fish, made sure they were eating, and disease free before he sold them. Wish there were more like him. Yes, his prices were a bit high, but at least you weren't buying sick animals from him...
