Last week I was at my LFS and i heard Sea Vision was going out of business? I've only been there once which was last month and they didnt have very knowledgable people there..... anyway I heard today at another LFS that Sea Vision is now selling there business? Has anyone been there lately? I thought Sea Vision was doing great? Is it that the Saltwater fish/coral business doing that bad or is it just a dead season? Sea Vision did have some nice stuff.......

I saw an ad on craigslist for a lfs for sale or to take on a partner. It was located in astoria but didn't give the name. I went there on saturday and they didn't have much. Every time i asked for a price of something that wasn't listed the guy had to call someone on the phone to find out. I've been there five or six times, and every time they tell me that they are getting a delivery next week and it never comes

OMFG... I just looked at craigslist.

http://newyork.craigslist.org/que/bfs/398737739.html

What happend? Where did all the good help go? I heard that he had a potential investor who worked for him? I wonder what happened?? And it also states that it was built march 2007? Wasnt that store opened around january? Are all fish stores suffering??? It seems like the only places doing well is H2O and Fishtown....

i believe that a saltwaterfish only store is not going to have much success, plus alot of the shops out there are established. i personally would not open a shop strictly dedicated to one field, small animals play a major income at most lfs.

i went to Wonderful World of fish on wednesday. It just opened up on stienway street. They don't have a huge selection of live stock yet but the owner is a nice guy and says that he is going to stocking items by request. He is not going to order large quantities of popular fish like fish town. The place is clean and nice and has a lot of potential.

like i said not alot of stock yet and only a couple pieces of coral. but very helpful. I wanted to buy a maroon clown to pair with the one i have. I wasn't sure if the one they had was too small. The owner took it out of the tank and put it in a tank with one that was the same size as mine. The larger on went after the smaller one right away. But it was cool that the guy was willing to do that so i wouldn't make a bad buy.

By looking at the pics in the above link, and recognizing the interior of the store that is most definitely Sea Vision. It's pretty sad! But one sentence left a nasty taste in my mouth; "We are quite competitive in pricing because we import directly from the country. Allowing us to sell livestock at a 400-500% markup." And those of us who purchased from them thought we were getting a good deal. What a laugh!

What a shame.....I haven't been to Sea Vision since April..(my tank is at capacity and nothing is dying...). It appears that they were probably counting on a bigger installation/maintenance business. It was not SW only...they also had a large, and healthy, FW selection. I wouldn't come down too hard on the comment about importing and marking up....Lots of other places have done that. Aquatic somethingor other on Woodhaven, the place that closed after the blackout, always used to import their stock from Bali, or some other place in Indonesia. The fact is that Sea Vision was able to sell their stock at the same price, sometimes less, as the on-line companies. I was actually able to get a 3-4" Crocea for $40...and, unlike any crocea I ever got before, it is still alive and thriving...as is the derasa I bought at a similar price. Personally, I highly doubt the percentage markup quoted on Craig's list...if so, they would still be in business. But importing directly does cut costs, involving middlemen, and allows those savings to be past on to us, while still allowing the business to profit. Also improves the health of the livestock, due to fewer changes of environment. The downside is that it may leave you dependent on just one or a few distributers...the guy at Woodhaven would only deal with his single company...even though he complained that they only sent him large corals that were harder to sell. He refused to deal with other suppliers. At any rate, while Sea Vision wasn't the largest place, and didn't have the hugest selection, they had the overall healthiest stock, best prices, and most knowledgable and honest salespeople I have seen in any one location, at least on the times that I was there. Take care, Eric

I understand that E. but what im saying is that alot of successfull shops have alot of different things catering to individual needs.if everybody had a saltwater tank i dont think they would have had much of a problem.if you try to explain the concept of a saltwater tank and everything that need to be done alot of people will shy away.i just feel that if your going to run a shop it needs to meet everyones demand.thats just my opinion and not an arguement.i've seened there pics and they do have alot of nice stuff but if i need bird supplies or my kid wants a hamster then thats one place i cant go.

i just went there couple weeks ago and i saw a maxima about 2 inches for $60, needless to say i did not buy it.

for a reasonable price of $45 i would grab it in a heart beat

by making less profit the store would clear the inventory faster and would end up with more profit.
