Enough to know that if the money had been left to accumulate compound interest in a savings account, it would have had an impact on the quality of my retirement!

Is the figure just for one tank ? Is that the cost for current configuration or ever iteration since inception of the tank ? How about for the entire length of the hobby ? Saltwater or reef ? Wow.. this could be deep! Let me pop a Valium before I start to think about it. Better make that 2...

Less than I've spent on diving... a lot less. So for all of you who feel bad about your reef costs... try this on for size.

Regs and dive computer $2500
Backplate, harness, bladders $1000
Training $4500 at least
Wetsuits and Drysuit $1500
Wreck diving gear $500
Now add the cost of the actual dives, air, etc...
Somewhere around $15-20k

So basically what I'm saying is... it's cheaper to have a reef in your living room, but you can't take the money to the grave.

Enjoy your hobby and don't think about the costs.

I have 30 years until "retirement". $11,175.34 spent on tank so far, invested at 5% would end up being $48,299.18. At 8% that would be $112,451.61.

I guess that's not so bad considering some people have probably spent that on tanks in their liftimes

Thats if i make it to retirement. LOL. The way things are happenning nowadays no one knows. I'll tell you guys one thing! You work hard for your money, so ENJOY IT!!! You may die in 30 years or tommorrow but bottom line is that money you have in your bank is not following you to heaven(or hell depending how many fish and corals you killed). I'm not saying to blow out your savings but don't be a miser either. Enjoy life to the fullest. You live once. THats what i tell myself everytime i think how much i spend on my tank. It could be worse. They got people who blow out their entire savings on gambling.... to the point of bankruptcy. And what they get out of that??? NOTHING! So.. don't beat down on yourself thinking how much you spent on your tank. Before we entered this hobby we should've known its exspensive and know what to expect. I always prepared for the worst when i got into this hobby. After all %85 of the time your tank crashes due to rotton luck. right?

You forgot to take out income taxes on your calculation...........Unless you put your money in an IRA. :wink1:

My wife knows how much i spent on my tank and she don't seem to mind. HOWEVER she dislikes the maintainance issue. Its very time consuming for such a large tank.:dead1:

I've spent alot, more than I like to think about, as we all seem too in this obsessive hobby.

But the tank is a mental health cure for me, so considering that I don't need a psychiatrist at the moment, I figure I am breaking even, :lol2:.

Also once you get it stable (stable = more experienced) I find that I actually haven't spent much money in the last couple of years as compared to my stupid beginnings.

MR HELPS alleviate costs also via fragswaps, trading and general morale though talking to other addicts about our problems, .

I started a spread sheet with all purchases for my new tank.

I set a budget in the top corner and had the box below it the "money left"

It's been WELL into the negative. For a LONG while.

But I don't care, I don't have a wife and/or kids to support. It's my play money and i do have a really nice tank to show for it.

I figure it's better than some of the other addictions I could have. Imagine smoking a pack a day. $7x365= ~$2500 a year. That's about half what I spent on my tank, and I don't have lung cancer! (Not that I'm saying smoking is bad, if that's one of your addictions, I cna't say anything. I have my own 'demons' to get over)

Agreed.

But then (in my less experienced case) something goes wrong, and I'm all stressed out about it. Actually, that's not quite true - while losing corals and things upsets me, it's sort of a game to figure out what went wrong and fix the problem.

See the good thing is that here at MR people give things away for free or give great prices for stuff. Take this weekend, Bret (bad coffee) Gave me 6 damsels for my angler fish. I volunteered a frag of Palys for payment which will be given at a later date, if not them another frag or maybe both. That is the MR spirit! Speaking of which my thank you thread never actually posted I think. I don't know. :scratchch
