Shark washes up in Rockaways

Here is the actual dispatch ticket we received in the firehouse:

I kept a copy of the ticket, since I never thought I would get a run like that.

Turns out that there were a few shark sightings in the Rockaways yesterday, the first being the one that washed up on the beach. Unfortunately, by the time my company got there, they were pretty far off of the beach and I didn't get to see any of them.

I and Big fish caught a baby bull off the beach in Great kills, about 2 weeks ago.... about 3.5 feet long... Going fishing in a little bit in the rockaways just because of this post...Will post catch around 10pm...

It was a thresher shark.....they have been turning up in inshore waters lately, according to the reports on NorEast....I've read at least 2 reports of people catching them while fluke fishing. Totally harmless sharks,BTW....Eric

eric, I was told that it is very common to find them around the support pillars of the Marine Park Bridge between Brooklyn and The Rockaways. Yes, I didn't talk to anyone, but judging by the pic, I would say it is a thresher. The funny thing is, with exception of whoever it was who called 911, most people on the beach seemed more upset about the fact that the shark left than they were about the shark being there in the first place. I'm actually curious of how the call went through the 911 system. I'll try to find out the dispatcher who received the call. I'm wondering if they called because the shark needed help, or if they thought the shark was a danger to people. I have to assume since the ticket came over as "person in water-shark in water" they may have felt danger towards people. You can't expect everyone on the beach to know it was a thresher or that it is mostly harmless.

Small threshers, common this time of year. Quite a few have been caught in the same area, most released since this size is not legal. The shark that washed up down the block from my apartment was about 30lbs. It was 6ft with the LONG tail, hardly a man eater. The beach shouldn't be closed. Makes for a good story though

up until last year, i used to go whenever life guard off duty, and swim solo WAY out past the surf, at beach 96th... (i know, not smart!) UNTIL last year sept somethin bumbed me reallll hard and since then i haven't been back to rockaways in a year :redface:

Just out of curiosity, whats the point of keeping caught sharks? I mean you can't eat most of them, right? So why NOT catch and release?

Thresher puppy. We've had a few 2x that size down in south Jersey just off the beach this year. Usually they sit in 20-30 fathoms munching lobsters.

but thats sad if people don't release-back undersize or sharks they hav no use for

well the ocean is teeming with all sort of sharks, just when we swim, surf, wade, etc we go with the odds that they are not interested in us more than alittle graze or bump to check us out

i still go swimming far out when i go to puerto plata and tobago

4 blues all over...Back to back action....biggest 36in..1 20in fluke didn't make it to Rockaways.. Stopped on the belt right before rockaway beach under one of those bridges...When I drove over it looked like the 3 people were fly fishing...fish on, fish on.. The end..Caught and released.. everything was fun probably go back today...

has anyone caught a shark to keep in their aquarium? what kind? years ago we were fishing under the bridge and then at another place where there's an old boat, and caught what my old neighbor called "sand sharks" they looked more like catfish like me. we threw them back. what species of shark are likely to be found fishing from the shoreline along longisland (including rockaway)
and no we didn't have a permit i don't do fishing usually, i got a fishin rod but i threw it out when i moved away from the old fishing beer-chuggin neighbor

It is illegal to catch and keep a lot of marine livestock without a permit. If you have any questions you can :google: CITES and it will tell you all you need to know.

yea that shark that washed up in rockaway they let it go back in the ocean but then it died and washed up. there was a baby sand shark about 4 feet long today at coney island beach last day of work and my friend picked it up and swam with it out and released it so all the people would toss it around... pretty sweet...
