I went out to shinnecock inlet (far out on Long Island) today and picked up some NSW!!! This is where Atlantis picks up their NSW. Will was gracious enough to take me and my mom around LI for about 6 hours today, THANKS Will!!

It would have been much quicker but I didn't listen to him and brought some roughneck containers, huge mistake. The water just comes right out of them when they are in the car. So he took us over to home depot and we picked up some 5G buckets with the tight lids. Those things are solid.

(where we took it from)

I took my cyber power battery backup out with us and a mag 7 pump. Dropped the pump in the ocean and let it do all the work. After we finished the backup still read 100% power, it was great. Everything worked out well.

(what we used)

It was a very fun day!

I don't think its necessary but I might run it thru a UV. I took the water directly from the inlet, you can't see it from the pictures but the Atlantic is about 1/8-1/4 mile to the right. The current where I put the pump down was incredibly strong so I really can't see any issues with this water. Atlantis actually takes their water from a dock some yards away to the left which is a little more enclosed. I got some water from there also so thats why I might use the uv. Will told me a lot of the guys out there use seawater without treating. His tank looked really nice and he doesn't treat for anything. It was really cool, I saw tangs, pipefish and some other fish I'm not sure about when I was there.

If I recall correctly from the tour I took at Atlantis, the water they bring in sits in a big holding vat for about 3 weeks and they do treat it with a UV. I do know it is not used directly from the ocean.

Honestly, I'm more worried about trading corals than using this seawater. Its not even about saving salt money on artificial seawater, gas going out could've paid for salt. I actually have plenty of salt in my closet already, but I've always wanted to have a tank with 100% seawater. I would pick seawater taken from certain areas over asw any day, it even just smells different.

Yep I think thats it. Its next to Oakland's Restaurant. Next time I go out, I'll probably go further to the tip of LI. I want to try to get out once a month and bring back 40G to make two 20G water changes. The 8 buckets should fit in my grand prix so I can save on gas.

the furthest out would be montauk point. you can walk out on the rocks under the lighthouse and get water there. I don't know how big a difference it will make. I'm out in bridgehampton pretty often. There's no collecting point like the inlet I know of there, it's all beach. But if you want to carry buckets of water from the beach your welcome to visit.

how difficult do you think netting the tangs you saw in shinnecock would be?

Not for nothing...I've collected in great kills for a little over 2 months now with no ill affects,no uv, and no diatom....I even took the uv off my tank and no problems I might be selling my uv soon...I'll give it 1 more months before I sell...I would love to get out to L.I. But I don't no about the distance...

J - Thanks for the offer, I'll let you know the next time I'm heading out. Will and I were talking about netting stuff but not sure how hard it would've been. He told me LIRA will be having a netting event later this month near Shinnecock, supposed to be a good time to catch stuff. BTW, the tang reminded me of a vlamingii but I couldn't see it well because the area was being shaded. But there were a lot of fish swimming around, this was in dock areas.

Bob - Good to know. But Will lived in Staten Island and he was telling me there was some area he wouldn't collect from, can't remember where though.

Crox99 - People said it really wouldn't matter but I would like to check it out.
