Please do't use that stuff...I watched 2 friends kill fish with that.. Something about there water parameters not being stable enough to use...Is what the manufacterer said...

Just clean up the water and wait it out...

<- had bad luck with Melafix as well. It just made my skimmer go crazy and ended up killing few LPS pieces...don't know the exact reason why, but it didn't really do the job it was inteded for.

What is wrong with your tank?

Nothing in particular. I was just sitting around wondering. Last week I was discussing with someone ChemiPure, which - when I had my previous tank - wiped out all of my SPSs in less than 12 hours. There was another MRer who had the same results after dosing his tank with it. But everyone else swears ChemiPure has been safe for their tanks. MelaFix is one of the most popular tank medicines and I wondered what people's experience with it was.

The other thing was that I had a pair of Clowns in my QT tank (aquacultured Clowns, mind you) and I could not get them to eat anything for days. They turned their noses at everything. So I got MelaFix and dosed the QT tank. After one dose - they started eating. Coincidence? Perhaps...

D,

No, not a coincidence - I would eat too if you were burning my flesh!

Melafix is a Eucalyptus based medication (all natural) will kill anything if not dosed correctly BTW, same goes for Chemiclean - I have dosed both on my sps display (180) with no ill effects, so, haters aside, it's not going to kill all your animals. The key is dosing it correctly if you're going to use it at all.

Aside from that - Melafix is best used on "scaled" fish - not clowns who have no scales - basically, you'll burn their skin and their natural slime coat with melafix - don't use it on clowns or your display unless you're prepared to dose exactly how the bottle recommends.

And again, you MUST turn off your skimmer.

And did you lose animals when you dosed chemiclean? Some animals reaction to stress is to eat - that's what I meant - let's not get transliteral.

VJ is right, but if you HAVE to dose your display (which sometimes happens) you should err to the side of caution and not "add just a little more to accelerate" as often hobbiest's do.

you asked for peoples experiences - those are mine.

When I used ChemiPure I followed the directions exactly.

I'm not sure eating is the first thing that comes to my mind when I'm burned!

I don't question your experiences with Chemi-Clean. But it killed all of my SPSs; and there was another MR member to whom the same thing happened. He posted here asking if it was safe and the next day he posted to say his SPSs were dead. Those are my experiences with Chemi-Clean. But I'm glad it works for everyone else.

MelaFix is a whole other cattle of fish. I was wondering about it because it had a desirable (to me) affect on my Clownfish in the QT. The thing with sick fish in the display is that catching them and placing them into a QT once they're sick is not a simple matter. And since they advertise MelaFix as being "reef safe" I wondered what people's experiences with it were, and - if one needed to - one could use it in a display with inverts and corals. Overdosing is never a good idea. Advil doesn't make a headache go away faster by taking half a bottle.
