Hi,

I am helping a friend set up a FOWL and he is drilled for a closed loop. 1.5 inch "input" and two 1" holes "output side".

Whats a good quiet pump for this situation...Is the Dart too much pump for two 1" bulkheads?

pump will be located underneath in the stand, stand is 3' tall.

Thanks,

Wes

I'm using a Quiet One 3000 for my return. I get just under 600gph at a 4.5' head w/2 90 deg elbows. It operates with a quiet hum & stays pretty cool under my stand.

You can run the Dart or Snapper off a 1.5IN intake, I called Sequence and they verified it will have no ill effect on the pump. My vote would be the Snapper as the head pressure will be zero in a closed loop and you mentioned a fish only setup.

Who did you talk to at sequence so I can give them a call because that makes no sense. It will reduce the pumps performance dramatically is what I was always told by them and others. They even say in the manual to never restrict the inlet.

thanks guys...We are changing the tank order so he has a 2" inlet hole and 4 1" outlet holes. Sound good for a Dart?

Paul,
I'm trying to remember if I called them or asked when they had the forum on RC. The site I purchased from originally listed the pump at 1.5 so thats what I drilled the sump for, when it showed up with the 2IN I wanted to verify I could use the 1.5 or if I needed to re-drill the sump and was told 1.5 would work. I've been running the Dart this was for 2 years with no problems and the pump is dead quite. I just looked and the site manual does say NOT to do this, maybe the switched motors since?

<900gph each outlet sounds pretty good. But it'll be around 140W. The snappers will do <675gph for around 98W. Either is a good choice and what most people use for closed loops.

qy7400 - Only reason I mention it is because I helped install a sump several months ago and we had to run around looking for 2" plumbing. And then someone else didn't believe me about a month ago and we looked at the manual to prove it.

I figured better safe than sorry so I emailed MDM again asking the same question; is there any ill effect reducing the intake from 2" to 1.5" and is it motor specific? This is the reply from Chris at MDM.....

The motor does not matter.....the rule is that the intake should be greater than or equal to the discharge....so technically you are fine, however, you should know that the sytem pressure increases when a narrower line is used for more of the run....rather than put an adapter at the pump to go from 1.5" to 2"..put tha same adapter at the water source and use a 2" line for the rest of the way...if it s a short 1-2' run then it doesn't matter much....wider is better for as long as can
