So I finally (!!!) filled my tank upgrade with water today....

... and found out that my new pump is LOUD. I'm currently using a Blueline HD 1320gph pump. Anyone have any suggestions for:

a) how to make it quieter

or

b) a quieter pump of similar voltage use and magnitude?

Thanks!

Search for the Panworld pump mod on the forums here. Its the same pump pretty much as far as whats beeing done with modding it to make it quieter. Is it a knocking loud or like a turbine engine?

Pretty much your removing the back vented cover, the propeller fan, then adding a piece of PVC and a PC fan to the back instead of the stuff u removed. Cuts down almost all the noise.

PM me if you need help lissa.

I'm running my returns, my skimmer and feeding a separate fuge off of the same pump. :) 500+gph to the skimmer, about 100-200gph to the fuge and the rest to the returns.

Basically, it sounds like a turbine engine. :( I put dishtowels under and around it to stop the vibrations, but I don't think that's what making the bulk of the noise.

The pump is perfect then.

Yeah its the fan that cools the pump. Go to Home depot and get a PVC pipe endcap and a PC fan. just see if you can fit a 180mm fan on it. The rest is detailed on the forum post on RC.

As for the vibration, my old panworld did that brand new. I called them to ask what was up they said to just take apart the impeller assembly, was it out and reassemble. Then let it run for a few days to get further broken in. Dunno if yours is new or used. If its still vibrating after a week i would call and get a preplacement pump. They said they would replace it if mine was still vibrating.

Is it a Blueline HD-40 1270GPH? That's 130W pump for your 40g tank which will transfer lots of heat even it's external. I have heard good things about the Gorman Rupp pumps, this one uses only 60W. Save you $80 per year on the electricity too!
