Thanks to partobe, I now have a protein skimmer.

Patrick helped me set it up on Tuesday, and we tried to run it. The problem is, the bubbles keep overflowing into the cup, even at the lowest setting. We think it might be because my tank is still cycling, and the water is still not crystal clear.

Has anyone here ever experienced this? What did you do? How did you stop the bubbles/water from overflowing into the cup?

Thanks.

Gelo

...

best to connect a tube to the collection cut and have all that nasty dirt come out into a bucket....

This skimmer is not practical but useble....Save some $$$ for a more powerful skimmer. I have 1 but I use it to cure rock....
if u want a hang on , remora pro is a good brand. Or a turbo power skimmer ....
Better to use an insump skimmer, euroreef is great .

Hi Gelo the water conditioner will cause it to over flow. How much did you use and when? Since you dont have fish yet I'm not sure if you need to use the water conditioner? Thats going to cause you problem each time you use it. The skimmer works great I think you will be more than happy with it. As you've seen I have a fully stocked 150 reef tank and it always did its job for me so its def for more than just curing rocks . Right now I would save my $$ for lights. Let me know how it goes.
If your not working Mon eve we;re going over to that jap buffet in Manhattan. Would you like to join us give me a call.( I know that's not really reef related other than we will be eating sushi)

I used the water conditioner a while ago, when I added the water to the tank. I let the water sit overnight before using it to top off.

Pictures are coming up.

Patrick,
I think I'll be up for sushi on Monday night. :)

that would be great we would love for you to join us we will prob be leaving around 5-6 but you could meet us there if that easier. Ok but if you put alot in it could stick around for awhile esp since you dont have a filter to remove it. Also if you let water sit out over night the chlorine dissolves. Check out the for sale section some one is selling lights.

here are photos of the skimmer and the skimmer return in action.

I waited for my water to clear up before running the skimmer again, and it still overflows.

I'm thinking, can it be an issue with the return a little above the water line? Should it be submerged?

thats too low, i had mine at 6" first and it wouldnt skim well. make it 3-4" mines at 3". let your tank settle a day more and try it again. put the valve to the lowest setting.

I had exact same problem, but like deanos said it was from a chlorine remover, that overactivated the skimmer. Eventually it skimmed out all the additive, but I didnt skim for a week and than just ran it hooked up a line from overflow cup to a bucket and just ran it till it stopped foaming. If it is from additive it will eventually skim out.
I have the same skimmer just the 125 version and I dont think the depth of pump will cause this to occur, because mine is in my sump and water is always changing depths and never causing this problem

That sounds plausible. I will try that too.

Did you set the water line on the neck line? (dry skim) also try to keep the water in your display at the same level everyday otherwise it will also overlow.

It skims pretty well on my fish only tank.
