Drawback for Solaris

I have the latest 6 feet "I" on 6 feet 175G Oceanic bowfront tank for only 10 days, it's too early to tell, but not as bright as 6 feet Giesemann 250W MH/T5 on my 215G, (6' x 2' x 30") Oceanic tank next to it.

Have a black 175G black Oceanic bowfront tank with matching pike stand for sale at $800.-.

Please join the LIRA club, attend the meeting on 1/18/07 and see the tanks and possible other equipments and live stocks for sale or auction.

Hey I saw your post about the solaris lights. Do you have the 6foot model on your tank? How is the coral growth? Does the fixture put out a lot of heat? Sorry to pick your brain but I'm seriously considering one of these things for my 180! Thanks!

Another drawback of Solaris is that the light spread is not as good MH. As acknowledged by the manufacturer in the following link, "with a metal halide system a 24" tank can be lit with one 12" pendant. Using the Solaris, you would need a 24" long system to light the 24" long tank."

http://www.solarisled.com/FAQTechnical/SolarisLightSpread/tabid/64/Default.aspx

My one feet tall green tree coral (sinularia) on the left back corner of 6 feet Oceanic 175G bowfront tank (18" to 24" wide, 30" deep) did not open as well after I changed from 6 feet Aquamedic 250W/T5 to the 6 feet Solaris "I" becuase it is not covered direct under the light. In the meantime, another similar sized sinularia is opening excellent at similar spot under Giesemann Infiniti 6 feet 250W/T5 in another 6' x 2' x 30" 215G tank.

Solaris I4 has only a width of 8.7" vs 15" from most 250MH/T5 combo fixtures, and I think the corals on the front and back will not be well covered if you have a tank of 24" in width.

Like florecent lights, LED also miss the water/light reflection created by MH.

I almost completely forgot all the heat/chiller problems in summer, I even consider changing Solaris back to my old 250W/T5 fixture so that my 1,600W heaters will not have to work all the time.

Compare the above setups by yourself in the next LIRA monthly meeting on 01/18/08.

i have the 72" solaris g series. it seems to be enough light for my zoos, anemones and stuff. the one thing i could say for it though is that since i added the light in 2 months everything starting breeding. i dont know if its the automtic cycle or just coincedence but thats what happend. as far as i know i thought mine was equal to a 250w mh and the new ones are equal to a 400w mh per 24" led strip
