Sumpless setup

I will be setting up 75 gallon sps tank. Want to do sumpless tank because I don't want to deal with any the cost, noise, leaking issues with overflow and sump. Will be using two Koralia 3 powerheads and HOB skimmer along with Live Rocks for flow and filtration. For ATO, I will be using Aqualifter on a timer to perform daily auto top-off. Sensor ATO didn't work for me in the past when the sensors malfunction. Anyone running successful sumpless setup?

Hey Alfani, know you upgraded to 90 gallon. Still sumpless with Remora Pros? What do you do for surface skimming and how you deal with water topoff?

For top-off I would recommend using a pressure sensor controlled top of unit. I would mount it inside a piece of capped and drilled pvc (snail guard).

Of course you will need to make an external mounting bracket for the sensor (don't count on suction cups!!)

I have done several of these and they work great!

I was thinking of upgrading to..and taking the same route..I thought of the setup..hob refuge, with two remora pros w/ surface skimmer boxes, and the 3 powerheads.

I've done it myself but I disliked topping off in the tank so much, I don't
care how big or small the tank is...I want sump action...

Not to mention dosing, the water line, finding a skimmer that looks
good hanging from the back of the tank and works...(yeah right)
Having a time out place for a PITA house guest, a place to add
other media, more water, more flow...

I will never go sumpless again, last time I did it was on a 20 gallon
and I added a 10 gallon sump/fuge setup.

Until I recently drilled my tank (Oceanic 40L) I was running sumpless with a Remora skimmer w/prefilter box & DIY auto topoff. I attached the float switch with a paperclip (bent to the tank frame, then out & away from the tank wall so snails couldn't reach it) some airline tubing to an air pump & a 2 gallon jug. Worked flawlessly, ever more worry free than my sumped setup, even though I like it more now. Much cleaner look inside the tank.

Seems it can be done if equipment is right to do sumpless. Guess I'll post what good hob skimmer to use for under $300.

Absolutely! It just depends on the trade off you do or don't mind dealing with...

all i have on my 37 gallon is two hob filters one running carbon and the other with phosphate remover and i dont have one single piece of algae and my water is crystal clear

i currently 2 remora running, one pro and one regular in my 95 Wave with manually adding water every day but thinking of getting something for topoff now, might be getting one next summer. I put a Koralia #3 about 4 inches from the surface to create the waves. I used to have the pro running with surface skimmer but found that it created more mess, not to mention problems cleaning it and wasted a lot of rooms.

I am also running a a 37 gallon fish tank without a sump. And you are free to look at my gallary and see that everything is healthy and i posted pictures in "pictures thread" and all i am running is a fluval 304 and a prizm skimmer with a powerhead. You dont need a sump for a successful reef tank. There are many members here on MR that dont have a sump and you would be amazed at their tanks. I will try to find the link of my pictures so you can determine that for yourself. And there are closeup pictures.

You shouldnt judge someone's tank just cause you dont see a picture in their gallary

Running a 75 fowlr and a 46 bowfront reef, both sumpless. I have remora pros on both, which does a pretty good job of keeping things clean. I have a HOB fuge on the bowfront, which I have found to be invaluable in keeping the water reef-quality.

i too used to have a sumpless system. it works but at limited capacity. i could never keep sps, espcially nice color sps for long term. things r much harder to do having no sump n needs lots of improvising. thats y when i upgraded, i make sure its drilled.
i think having pics in your gallery will make yourself more crediable in claims that u make here.
i remember 1 member here once said never take advice from some1 who cant produce 1 pic of your tank or something like that.

btw:every reef tank has algea. thats a fact.

Glad to see these sumpless setup out there. I did check your link Mark24, looks Good! Right now, I'm thinking about going sumpless and see how it works for me. Most of my sps are frags ( 1 to 2 inch ), so I don't need cal reactor yet. Have read some users that stay does the two part solutions on 75 gallon. So have to see how that goes also.
